Death wobble with new track bar

Hi everyone,
I am a new member to the forum and have owned my first TJ for about six months. Love the Jeep, but I’m having a serious problem with death wobble. After reading this forum and other sites it appears that the track bar is most likely suspect. I bought a new one today to install this weekend. I then looked at the receipt from my first check up with my mechanic and he replaced the track bar in May. Could the track bar already be bad or is there something else I should look at?

The bolt hole can elongate. IE become egg shaped. You can also check the torque on the bolt to make sure it didn't loosen

X2 to this. Check the bolt hole shape and make certain that new track bar is torqued to spec on both ends!

DW is very commonly poor tire balance. Have you had the tires balanced, perfectly?

If the hole has become elongated it is due to improper torque, ie; too loose. Properly torqued even in an elongated hole, it should not move.

Cause and effect.

Cause - tires start the movement , the front end isn't active , it's reactive basically , except for steering input.


Effect - the worn parts ALLOW the movement .

Thank you everyone for your replies. I just got done replacing my track bar and putting on new front shocks. The hole was perfectly circular. I’m getting new winter tires this week. Hopefully everything put together will solve my issue.

Check true frame side mount as well, if you haven’t.

Another thing is to check is all your bushings, perhaps your control arm bushings are worn. Other folks sometimes have dropped pitman arms from their steering box due to bad advice from a budget lift.
