Fuel Pump Access Panel

I have dieselized TJ and will eventually be adding a mileage extender. (mixing valves to blend in waste oil into diesel on the fly) so experimenting will be ton easier with access to these lines on the tank. Right now I just need to add an aux. 12v fuel pump so might as well cut out access now. (TJ pump is de-activated) Live in rust belt so I know all the tank mount bolts are going to break of. Rather deal with that later... getting this back on the road is priority and dont have tools to drop tank.. (am working in the grass under a tarp). TJ's has 3" body lift so not worried about moving tank (ifff it stayed in home location) that has held diesel for a few years (does not fume ignite like gas tanks)

Anyone able to offer measurements on where to cut?

Anyone got a hint on where would be easiest for me to dig in and look to see if the previous owner who did the body lift moved (or not) the tank up higher? Or would the tank move up with the body anyway?? Im not yet aware if tank attaches to body or chassis cross members

The front is right up against the seat belt bolt in the middle.

Much thanks for responding.

On yours didn't you have to cut into the body cross member? Looked at your pics in this thread posted earlier. Like the idea of not cutting that cross member which others were able to do. That is the major question I guess. How minimal far up from the lip (or other logical place to measure from) in back of tub (bumper end) does one need to go to cut and just miss that cross member?

Neither of those folks who missed the cross member in their mod (or partially missed... ) with pictures in here are active on this board anymore though. Not sure if one was not an LJ as well ... One below is a TJ. Looks like he still had to trim the cross member some though. .

Well dug deeper.. Tank is not raised..... nor did the person who did this diesel swap utilize the Jeep tank pump area. They added fittings to the tank in the back upper corners. right under tub brace's ... crud.

SSooooo will have to rethink all this. Think I can at least get in a 12v pump in there with much cussing nor dropping tank.

Once you've gotten the tank out and got some fresh hardware it's really not hard to drop.

I added stainless nutserts to the filler neck and front and rear bolts. Makes it a pretty quick and easy process to drop the tank.

Do you have a thread or post(s) somewhere on your fuel return Mod you added into the pump lid? Will be doing this too.

Adding reference dimensions if an LJ owner is considering adding a GenRight fuel pump access panel. There’s a specific design for the LJ due to wider floor ribs…. P/N: GST-5060 Long story short, the instructions for placement/ hole cutting instructions are, in my opinion, incorrect. They give a dimension of 4.9” whereas I went with something closer to 5.6” which ensures you’re able to have clearance to remove the fuel pump. See photos. I used auto seam sealer to seal the frame to the floor pan, that seems to work well. The reason I needed access was not for the pump, but to perform the tank filler plug modification to stop fuel spit when fueling the vehicle. This provided great access for that purpose and then when the fuel pump goes on a full tank, no need to fight with dropping the tank!

Something I learned at Buck Island on the Rubicon. One guy in our group wasn't getting fuel checked all the normal stuff guy comes over and says hit the bottom of the tank with a hammer sure as shit the pump started working again. It saved us a lot of grieve and made it off the trail.
