My son and I are making the trip to Moab in May. We just did another phase of upgrades and have our 01 set up pretty well but we still have a few decisions to make about lockers and trail spares. I've been out there as part of a family vacation with a rented JK but didn't wheel it too hard since i had to turn it back into AVIS in SLC.

Current set up: 2001 Sport 4.0 5spd
DPG super ultimate JKS trackbars and control arms, OME Springs, MML, BL
SYE Tom Woods DS
Currie steering and Antirock
Assorted skids and Warn Sliders
Warn m8000
4.56 Dana 44 w no slip Dana 30 Aussie OEM shafts
33 MTR's

Wanting to go selectable in the rear and have been reading all the threads on ARB and Eaton E Locker.

What spares do you guys carry? We have the basic u-joints and misc bolts etc but do not currently have spare axle shafts or other "big" parts.

A selectable locker is more important in the front than in the rear so you can unlock it to steer easily. But as far as spares make sure you have good ujoints in the driveshafts and axles. Since you have a lunchbox locker up front maybe a couple spare shafts but honestly most often fix I’ve had to do on a trail is U-joint or steering related.

Parts are available in town, but it can be a long drive to go get them. I went 2 years ago, riding shotgun with a friend in a JK, that is when I learned that good shocks make a trip to Moab enjoyable and not a fatigue ride...U joints and tools to change them. Consider a good battery operated impact and a jackstand. Tim

Doesn’t a PowerTrax No Slip in a Dana 30 disengage when you turn?

Not if you are under power in the front with it in 4wd, I ran a lockright in a cj 30, worked good except when you had one wheel on limited traction and hit the brakes...chattered like crazy if I was not in 4wd, if it was engaged, it kept the locker loaded up and locked. Tim

I carry a lot. Sometimes my friends say too much. I carry spare steering(drag link, tie rod and extra tie rod ends), spare Dana 30 shafts (probably easy to find used). Sometimes it's easier to just swap a front axle if a u-joint or ears gets eaten(make sure you have the right socket to remove your calipers and axle nut) I carry spare yokes, yoke straps/bolts, a spare slave cylinder, enough spare hardware to supply a small fleet of vehicles, and spare fluids of every type..in addition to tire plug kit.

My buddies have a big group going end of April into May, I can't because of work stuff....Sounds like you and your son will have a great trip....take plenty of pics. Have fun.

I wheel pretty light on extra parts and I don’t have a heavy foot either, so I carry tools to do just about anything but parts wise just u-joints, extra straps, hardware for straps, tire repair (learn how to reset a bead on the trail), some fluids (replace and top everything off if something was low or leaks make sure to take some extra), radiator hoses, cap, t-stat, water pump (replace with new and take old as spares), belt (put a new one on and take the old as a spare), hose clamps, and a spare tire Some people wheel without one (god bless them) I would have the lunch box in the back and the selectable in the front. I wheel for fun not to wrench so I do all the service stuff before a trip like Moab or The Rubicon.

Make sure your cooling system is in top notch condition. We went 2 years ago and my radiator sprung a crack in upper tank half way to getting there. If the cooling system and radiator have over 100k miles, replace it with a quality Mopar unit. Do not get a parts store radiator. They are garbage.

I like the copper brass radiators, I put one in a 98 that was from 84, lasted for 300k miles between both jeeps.

Had a great trip to Moab! Here's my post trip update.

Pre trip:
went though the cooling system replaced water pump, hoses, t-stat & housing, mopar radiator, cap
replaced intake manifold to fix vacuum leak (lot's of fun)
had pro inspect/service both axles and install rear ARB (he found and replaced bad bearing and seal)
Built a new storage box w drawer
oil change/ fresh fluids everywhere
Inspected re torqued all control arms and track bars replaced upper control arm bushings rear (JKS)
Inspected all u joints and replaced rear driveshaft single joint
Hit every grease zerk i could find

Just in case stuff:
colby valve stem
ujoints/straps/hardware
Seal tape
spare Air line and couplers

Trail repairs:
Broke a dana 30 u-joint on the first trail
Went ahead and bought (In Moab) and installed Yukon cromo shafts and replaced the bad ujoint so i would have spare shafts
Had injector 4 go bad while back-country camping at canyon lands (had to get out and over elephant hill w 5 cyl) Orielly's got one in the next day at 7AM and back on the trails

Best tools - Ridgid 18v 1/2 impact, Tub O Towels,
Tools i forgot - 12pt 13mm socket for unit bearing (had 6 pt only so had to use box wrench)

Spares i wished i had - injector, spare shaft on day 1

Mods i wished I would have done
Tera 2 lo - Could have got around most of the time on trails in 2 lo and then used 4 lo and/or lockers for obstacles

Trails - Fins, Hell's Revenge/Hells Gate, Moab rim, Steel Bender, poison spider, golden spike, gold bar rim, top o world, la Sal pass until the snow got too deep, elephant hill
