Hey folks. Sorry I haven't updated in a while, just haven't had anything to update. Until now. The knocking sound was still as present as ever, so I decided I'd try a different approach. I don't normally care for additives, and I know there are a ton of different opinions on here about them, but I've tried so many different things that I thought, what the heck? I will try one out. I bought a can of Engine Restorer a while ago that has just been sitting on my shelf, so I decided I'd give it a try with my previous oil change. I used Rotella T6, 5w-40, and added the Engine Restorer... and was BLOWN AWAY.
The knocking is gone, and the engine is running smoother than ever.
Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating for Engine Restorer, I'm not dumb enough to think that solved the problem, rather it more than likely just cleared up a symptom for a little while. But I am fascinated by the result. I still get a little bit of clanking after I've run the engine for a while, especially after shutting the engine off, and then turning it back on again when it's still warm. Like when running to the store or something. I will notice some clanking on startup at that point, but it's still drastically quieter than it used to be.
So, that says to me that the noise is definitely coming from something in the engine, most likely piston slap. Engine Restorer claims to "fill in the warn spots" in cylinder walls, so I imagine that could be what has helped quiet the sound down, especially if it was indeed the piston banging back and forth.
I know some have expressed concerns about cat failure using this stuff, and other have said it's liquid gold. I don't have an opinion either way yet, I'm just here to share an update, that's all.
At the moment, I'm enjoying the quieter and smoother ride, with noticeably increased power. I'm not a fan of just treating symptoms, I'd rather treat the cure, but I only drive my TJ a few thousand miles a year, so for me, the benefits may outweigh the risks. Time will tell.
Thanks for all your great input! This is such a great community!
