I have to rant

Whoever came up with that "the customer is always right" bullshit needs to be kicked squarely in the taint.
I'd say in a lot of industries that finally changed for a while during COVID. Finally the customer wasn't so important and you had to be "essential" and every order had to be pre-ordered / massive waits etc. Then customers took it to new level of taintness and started complaining about both too much and not enough mask enforcement. Have anyone mentioned how much people can suck?

I don't do it much here, but in real life (mainly work) when I get a question I don't know how to answer without the recipient feeling stupid or insulted, I try to lead them to the answer with more questions. I'm not sure it helps.

One of my favorite questions when someone has just asked me something similar to which way does the spring go? How do it know?

The number of support tickets I receive that only contain the words "My computer is not working". Thanks, I'll get right on that.

IT work is a job where you learn to hate people.
The stereotype that IT people are anti-social is true, but cause and effect are reverse of what people think. We did not go into IT work because we are introverts, we became introverts after working with users crushed our soul.
Then there are those well meaning people who I swear exude some kind of "field" that makes computers go TILT in all sorts of strange ways. My wife is one such. She managed to blow up not 1, not 2, but 3 monitors in as many months at her work! I'm always straightening out strange and wonderful problems with her laptop. I had 3 or 4 people at my previous (IT) job that were the same way.

Some people do not know how some things are related and others are not. The joke in my office is " Ever since your plumber worked on my Kitchen Faucet my lawnmower will not start". Can't fix stupid
I have way too many examples of that one. Ya'll swapped my transmission and now my rear main seal leaks. Sorry, they aren't connected. My mechanic said you let the trans hang on the crank and that moved it enough to squash the seal and make it leak now.

How are the bearings? What? How are your crank bearings doing? I don't understand. Exactly. In order for the crank to move far enough to damage the rear main seal and cause it to leak, the bearings would have to be shot.

Not to mention, the alignment dowels engage before the pilot on the input shaft goes into the pilot bearing so there is no way for us to "hang" the trans off of the crank. It has a rear main leak now. Alright, but go do some research on the 4.0 and you'll discover that the ones that have never had a RMS leak are few and far between. In fact I'm surprised that yours made it to 130,000 miles before it leaked.

Some guy was messaging me the other day via the contact form on this site. We go back-and-forth exchanging numerous emails about how he can't reset his password for the forum, asking me if I can give him a temporary password, yada, yada. I go ahead and give him a temporary password and he still can't get in.

At this point between the non-sensical emails and the piss poor grammar it was apparent I was talking to an airhead.

I then asked him if he was even sure he had the right forum, at which point he asks me, "jeep forum.com"?

To which I replied, "Nope, wranglertjforum.com".

This is one of those moments where I actually did a real life face palm.

I spend all this time going back-and-forth with someone only to find out they don't even know what forum they're on.

That was me. Sorry chris... ill try to do better in the future!

I am in the auto body industry and some people will never understand that we fix what was damaged in the accident only. We aren't going to fix that quarter panel dent from 3 years ago that is unrelated. Then they leave a nasty survey and online review which is the best way to get back at us since we are partially graded on them

I wonder how many gear setters have been accused of causing a vibration in a TJ.

Amazing. Like I always say; the more forms of communication we have, the more miscommunication.

Could it be that English wasn’t his first language? Im ask as the son of immigrants. I bet ya that had ‘something’ to do with it ✔😂

Hey, insurance is covering that dent in the quarter panel, can you fix all the other dents and do a respray of the entire car since I know you are screwing the insurance over? Uh no, the insurance has this shit down to a science and I have a minute by minute job cost for each item and if I missed anything, I'm going in the hole. So no, there is not any room for a respray or even enough extra to fix one dent other than the fresh one that isn't fully rusted.

Yep, I worked at a body shop and I've seen and heard it all from customers that think you are just screwing the insurance blind.

Hey, I have a 1500 dollar deductible, can you hide that in the estimate so I don't have to pay it on my 1800 dollar repair? Sorry buddy, there isn't enough room for a 150 dollar deductible much less 10 x that much.

You didn't color sand and polish that spray job. That's right, look here in the book, Lexus, Jaguar, and one other pay for color sand and buff. The rest don't.

Why did you do a blend right there? Because your insurance won't pay to spray out the roof, A pillar, B pillar, and deck. I can almost see the blend. We almost care.

I paid 3 grand for a paint job, I can see imperfections in the paint when I get real close. That's right, we discussed this when you got the estimate. 3 grand is a 5 foot paint job and it goes up by a grand per foot of viewing distance. You want to see nothing at 4 feet away, that's another grand, let us know how close you want to look at it and we'll work you up a price. I didn't think you were serious. Sucks to be you then.

I do that all the time. I feel bad making people look stupid, so I try and guide them to the answer. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it backfires and makes the individual feel more stupid than if I just gave them the answer.

I am so looking forward to retirement.
Then when the drones from our customer service call me to look up a part number they can't, or won't try to find; or call a customer for them, instead of saying "Sure" or "I have my head stuck in a machine at the moment and I'm working outside in the horizontal rain. I'll have to check later." Or my favorite, "Um, I'm on vacation." I can say "Go fuck yourselves, I'm retired." And not get in trouble for it.

We are doomed. Every now and then we get tickets or calls routed to my team that are for the helpdesk, and some of the issues reported are as basic as "Have you pressed the power button on your monitor to see if your -PC- is really dead? or, Is the mouse light red at the bottom?" type thing.

Common sense went out the door a long time ago, and there this sense of entitlement I get from people when you try to help them, but they're too dense to get it, and yet they expect you to just do it for them. Years ago I had a standard answer for those that felt I should just fix it for them and not help them learn "You're not that cute"(didn't matter if it was a man or a woman it was my standard answer) now, I can't really say that or HR will probably go apeshit on me.

I'm on the other side of @Chris' rant. I'm fairly ignorant when it comes to electronics, including this computer. When you all start talking about IP addresses and shit, I haven't a clue what the hell you're talking about. Therefore, I ask what I'm sure are deemed stupid questions by "them that knows". The real problem is, however, I care about all of it just barely enough to get the immediate issue resolved, but not enough to remember it the next day, or to learn from it. It just doesn't interest me, and therefore, I don't retain anything. Maybe that makes me a dumbshit. Could be. But it really doesn't matter, because I know that all this internet stuff is just a fad, anyways. It'll pass. ;)

For all the stuff that bores me at work I just write notes so I can talk semi-intelligently in the future about the boring topic. I try to do the same with personal relationships with folks I don't otherwise relate to well.

Might be worth a try. Of course, it could also be one of those situations for me where you say a few words in another language, and the other person immediately starts speaking the same language fluently. At least where I'm at now, they can't help but know from the beginning that they're dealing with someone who's clueless. :)

After 25 years in IT I have been there more times than I can count and feel your pain.

It's like spending hours searching our email system for a supposedly critical email for our CEO, only to find out it was never sent...
After 20 years of being on the end of calling IT if needed I’ve learned one thing......restart, twice, then call. Hahaha

I understand that this is annoying, however calling that guy an airhead isn't really appropriate. Most forums look almost the same these days and frequently the same software is in use. In addition, having multiple tabs open and switching between them is quite standard when it comes to user behaviour. What about simply making a mental note, like "ask next time what forum the user is trying to access?"
I could be that the person at the other end is a surgeon with no idea about computers and you end up on their table one day...
