James & The Sahara Build Thread

Yesterday i got the new radio in! Got a working cassette player so I have my Sirius XM again! Feels good to have tunes again, some quality went into refurbing this thing. The aux is wired into one of the buttons so the button no longer function. You can listen to aux by inserting a cassette and having an input plugged into the aux port. If nothing is in the aux port the cassette plays. Sound quality is surprisingly good, I do have intentions of amping the speakers again and doing a center console sub.

I also dropped off the axles to get black glass blasted and primed/painted. I should be taking em to Motobilt next week.

I finished the Gentex Mirror wiring and it works great. Love having a dimming mirror driving with no rear window at night.

My savvy front lower control arms come tomorrow and ECGS’ UCA Bushing came today (Which is really just a Moog). I ordered this because price was right and came with the outer sleeve which most of them didn’t.

Cassettes... LOL. I missed that! I remember those days. I grew up with them before CDs.
Surprisingly I never got into CD’s.
I still have 2 case logic containers full of my old cassettes. Just dated myself.
That’s awesome lol. My old dodge truck helds like 20 cassettes organized in the center console.

Is that just a factory radio with an AUX function built in? I dig it. I want it.

Small update: Savvy lowers came in today, as everyone says these things are BEEFY. Like all other UPS purchases they came in a little beat up but doesn’t bother me too much.

I purchased used dana 30 axle shafts with good ujoins from deadjeeps on Ebay. I also finally found one spice half door panel in nearly new condition for the passenger side. All of my current spice panels look great now. I don’t have a spice driver side half door panel, so keep your eyes out fam!

Just an update, if all goes as planned I will be driving down to Dothan Alabama on friday to drop off the axles for motobilt. I am currently waiting on the shafts to get here (UPS Expected Thursday) and the paint guy to finish them up. I totally forgot to remove the ball joints when I dropped it off so I guess they will get painted over lol. I have full intention of replacing them with the beefier spicers in the future but for now I hope I can scoot by as my funds are dwindling (I certainly hope I don't get DW off the bat by something as simple as a ball joint). I don't really know how long to expect this project to take to get the axles under the Jeep at this point since I am servicing all of the braking equipment ect.

Also if anyone in the forums is in need of 3.73 Dana 44 gears with LSD or a complete housing/shaft/gear/brake set of 3.07 Dana 30/35's definitely let me know, I'll give you a hell of a deal so I don't have to fiddle with storing them in my second floor apartment complex.

Mini update, called motobilt and ordered the parts, I have instructed them to replace every single bearing and seal that are inside the axles. I did also instruct them to order a set of spicer ball joints to install while they had the axles so I wouldn’t need to fiddle with that trying to get them on. This should be a 100% bolt on prodedure not messing with the internals and only having to install the braking equipment. Axles are being cleaned up still, but once I have some proper pictures that will be heading your way!

Also unlike my previous jobs I have done at the mechanic bay at fort benning I will be tackling this in my spare time in front of my apartment complex. In the event I can’t get it all done on weekend I can still get to school!

Just a mini update from yesterday, got my dana 30 axle shafts and they do have solid ujoints. I removed the torx from my half doors and repositioned the door so it doesn’t suck butt to close and open. I also got the new panel in:

The last picture was a big slap in the face lol, the doors and panels that were originally bedlined were a perfect match to my TJ. Ugh lol, I will be sharing my motobilt experience later today!

In the event someone is interested I had the axles black glassed down to bare metal, primed, and painted. This was done by a local jeep club member in his body shop for $125.00 an axle, great price for me to not have to worry about paint.

Here is some misc. pictures of them cleaning up the axles, the brown is rust dust lol:

Also huge shoutout to my local jeep club member brandon for making a pallet for the axles! Sure made unloading them way easier than loading em up by hand!
