James & The Sahara Build Thread

I will be cutting em. I’ll post up pictures in a bit of exactly where. A call over to savvy and it looks like the rest of my armor will be on friday. Hoping it gets here while I still have daylight so i can just pop it on.

Easy day today!

Worked on my wrap around license plate. Need a couple more bolts 7 is appropriate versus the 4 I originally thought.

I'm amazed at how much you've got done in short order. Cudos brah!
I appreciate it! Helps when you are motivated!

I have one or two more small mods planned and that’s it for a really long time lol...

Edit: also that hidden surprise is still in the works, just a stupid long road trip trying to plan it out.

I put these in the slider post but these products are well deserving of more photos in the build thread, god knows I haven’t seen too many. Here are some photos of the slider side you don’t usually see:

I will let you guys know I am slightly nervous to see how the step and rub rails hold up being stainless steel. I had to clean them up with a sanding block and then apply sharkhide after install day. We’ll find out the next rain or so. I will let you guys know the longevity of the metal protectant for sure.

Sure does look good though :D.

They use that sharkhide stuff on Pontoon tubes, right? That is a much more harsh environment that you step sliders. Moisture is a killer...
For sure. I’m more than confident of its ability on protecting the aluminum. Its more the stainless steel than anything, salt and rain broke the Cr layer fairly early. Hopefully the sharkhide keeps it safe.

The aluminum used on the bottom piece is noticable different, I called Katie at Savvy Offroad, she said it could just be corroded, sigh:

It looks dang good:

Some final notes: The holes for the tail lights, tailgate hinges, key slot, rear tailgate handle, and license plate were not even close to lining up. All of the holes either had to be wallowed out, re-drilled, or presented to the public post installation.

All of the corners were pretty badly bent. Its ok because post installation the body reshapes it to follow the corners.

The current tailgate valance appears to be a subpar quality. Katie says its the same material as the others, but you can clearly see it vastly different in texture, quality, and ability to be cleaned up. Every other component looks fantastic minus the valance.

The tailgate valance is advertised to say savvy offroad engraved on it. Being quite honest I only purchase it for that reason. Katie at Savvy says they recently switched manufactures of the pieces so that is why my valance piece didn’t have Savvy engraved on it. I sent her a request to exchange it for one that did have the engraving and awaiting results.

I’m not trying to complain about these things, really happy with how it turned out. I just want the product to be perfect and thought the things wrong with it with easily avoidable. Hopefully I can get that valance exchanged.

I called swag offroad today, a local Jeep shop in Oregon. I spoke with the owner and plan to purchase the parts/hinges only in a couple weeks. My current tail hinges are REALLY showing their age without a tire mounted to it.

Wow...I'd be really ticked about the misalignment in the clearance holes. You dropped some serious coin there...I get that each tub is going to be different, but that is where you design a relief all the way around, so that it doesn't detract from the whole install. They've still got some things to learn over there at Savvy about finishing...Good design can be ruined by execution so easily.

I return shit all the time when it’s not perfect. Are they going to throw you some bills because it’s that far off? I’d be ticked if it were me. I know that stuff couldn’t have been cheap.

With this kind of company it doesn’t work that way sadly.
We jeepers have high expectations.
But the holes not lining up on a Jeep TJ specific product? Is that not one of the implied expectations when buying something for your TJ?

I am with Starrs, shit like that really pisses me off especially when it is so expensive. You work hard for you money, and if you have to give it away you expect the people you give to are working hard too, or at least care. Doing some research I could see that Savvy was highly respected, but lately they are getting bad reviews. Especially about quality and over marketing. I really hope they come through with your valance. If they don't, maybe you can get it engraved locally that says Savvy Sux or something funny like that. It is the little shit that bothers me as you can tell from my posts. I have to say though despite the issues you are having your Jeep really looks good. It is like a whole new Jeep. Not that it didn't look good before but now it looks good on steroids. ,

I wouldn't be happy either.

To put it into perspective, nearly everything on the ORFAB tire carrier was well presented and thought out. The only thing I had an issue was, was with the striker and they could have easily been human error. If you call yourself the best, I'm damn sure I'm going to hold you to it.

I agree, and I really appreciate that! She is almost 100% done externally, I'm quite happy with the finished product.

Over the past couple weeks I haven't exactly what I would call the best experience with Savvy. From the lift kit shocks being poorly thought out, to the misaligned holes/missing tailgate spacers I really hope they swing this ship around. I buy quite a bit of their things because I can see the passion Blaine put into the products. He identifies problems & creates elegant solutions. The same reason I like supporting local companies who put their sweat and effort into things. I'm a reasonable guy and can deal with mistakes, across both corners/tub rails/tailgate armor the holes were misaligned. I can deal with that, fingers crossed the valance works out.

Really surprised to say the least. I read great reviews from veteran members like @Jerry Bransford and @Chris on this forum when it comes to Savvy’s product line. Ive read plenty of post about their superior build quality and attention to detail but no real hires shots like I am seeing here where I can see actual product in detail. Any idea what is going on at Savvy? Seems like the latest photo evidence doesnt match up to the verbal praises I have seen here on this forum in the past. Rub rails not being straight or following the natural rear body curve, a majority of the holes not lining up, missing hardware, missing parts, missing mounting brackets, and so fourth. Seems very odd. Maybe its just a few bad batches that snuck through that @JamesAndTheSahara has recieved thus far.

I can't discredit the rub rails because the bend is taken care of by the bolts being snug, with the corner mount removed its up to me to make that one work. I'm happy with the end products, just concerned why certain mistakes were made. Again, hoping I can at least get the valance taken care of.

Agreed on the rub rails, that's on you. the hole misalignment would bother me, but not a deal breaker for the amount of variance a TJ has. not making excuses for Savvy. We need comparative evidence.
