Life was simpler

Heard it said the modern detergents are more harmful than the natural oil. I used to buy non-detergent oil from Mobil for my old 53 Pontiac flathead six.

When I started changing oil at a shop in highschool I was an apprentice for this older Haitian gentlemen named Joe. This dude was an old-school mechanic that tuned by ear and smell and didn't want a damn thing to do with a scan tool (this was pre-OBDII). He would regularly, and I mean half a dozen times a day, wash his hands with transmission fluid and then spray them off with brake cleaner. I don't know how long he lived, but it couldn't have been long.
Used to regularly wash my hands in gasoline. Nothing takes the grease and grime off better! I figured that as long as wasn't a smoker, there was nothing to be concerned about, right? ;)
My guess is that the silver recovery wasn't profitable at the time especially with the daily dilute quantities. The recovery process is relatively simple chemistry and was certainly possible in the 1960's and earlier. I wonder if over time, that backyard would become concentrated enough to be worth mining during the "cleanup".
Are you questioning whether or not it would be a goldmine in silver? ;)

There is an interesting correlation between lead pollution from early gasoline and violent crime and general societal bad behavior.

One of the largest refineries in California located in El Segundo, which is named that because it is the location of the second Chevron refinery ever built, used dirt holes to store oil in for over 50 years. Yep, dug a hole and pumped millions of gallons of gas and oil into it for storage. The ground water for a few miles could probably fuel a low compression engine.
