I have a 2002 Wrangler X with 3.07 gear ratio. I want to run 33" tires. What do I need to regear to? Thanks.

if you have a manual then regear to 4.88
if you have a automatic then regear to 4.10

this is if you still have the stock transmission

Form 4-88 FRC is the form to download to apply for a regear- all applications for the next month need to be in by the 10th of the preceding month with all the supporting documents. Good luck.

You live in the flat low altitude state of Louisiana. For your 4.0 and 32RH 3-speed automatic I'd go strictly 4.10 for 33's. If you have plans to eventually get 35's I'd go with 4.56. Your automatic means you don't need or want a lower ratio like 4.88 or even 5.13.

Thank you for the information.

What parts will I need to buy to regear to 4.10? My mechanic by my house says to regear I will need to change out a few things. He quoted me a price of around $3600 to do front and rear. Just trying to figure out what's all needed to be able to run 33" tires.

You gonna want lockers?

In any case... Dana 35 gonna need a new carrier. Stronger axles are a good idea as well.

Then there are the new gear sets.

Also assuming your already lifted and driveline is corrected.

At a minimum, you’ll need gears, master install kit, and new carriers. If you want lockers, all but lunchbox lockers will replace the carriers.

If you use lunchbox lockers, those will also need new carriers. Finally, if you lock the rear axle, it’s highly recommended you get new 30 spline axle shafts. The stock Dana 35 27 spline shafts are failure prone with large tires and lockers.

Thanks for the info. Does the price sound right for what I want to do?
It depends on what it includes. What are you getting for that price?

As a frame of reference, I recently regeared from 3.07 to 4.56 and spent appx. $3,200 for the following:
  • Front Eaton Elocker
  • Rear Detroit Truetrac
  • Front and rear rings and pinions
  • Master install kits for both axles
  • Labor
  • Sales Tax on parts (no sales tax on labor)
I didn't need carriers because the front locker and the rear Truetrac replace the carriers.

It wasn't the cheapest rate I found, but it was far from the most expensive in this area. It may be worth getting quotes from a couple of different shops to see what is reasonable for your area.

Same thing I did,same price,give or take 100.00

When converting from his 3.07 gears to 4.10? I’m not speaking in general, I’m answering his question and referring to this specific circumstance.
You don't need new carriers to go to lower ratios like from 3.07 to 4.10, all you need is the correct "thick" gear set that eliminates the extra cost of replacement carriers.

Are there thick-cut Dana 30 and Dana 35 gearsets? If so, I've never seen them (not that I've searched hard for them)...
