The instructions are excellent (pictures too). Even I didn't screw things up. It's basically plug and play. (y)

Very simple. Make a plate that has press in studs that point outward to attach the OEM plastic license plate mount to with nuts and fender washers. Offset those down from the original holes enough to clear the tail light housing. Attach with supplied ultra low profile socket cap screws in Torx with a 6mm thread that screws directly into the original holes with a matching thread.

The hole is a drill guide. Some folks may not want to see the small bit of wire that goes up into the groove on the back side of the tail light housing. If that is the case, they can drill the tub, take the plate light wire in that way and then plug that into the harness connector we supply.

I am crazy anal retentive with 'the details' and that little wire wouldn't bother one bit. The damaged paint under the license plate holder is going to drive me nuts though.

Were the OE taillights through bolted to the tub or are there threaded inserts in the tub? I bought my TJ with some shitty Chinesium LEDs. They were through bolted and there are no threaded inserts on my TJ. I think the PO drilled them out. Actually, it looks like they jack-hammered them out. How do the BMB housings mount? Can't remember what I did when I mounted the Trail Tails.

No, the kit doesn't include the plate light which is LED as well. The tail lights do include the harness an connector for the plate light. Too many folks don't run the license plate in the stock location to make them pay for relocator kit with light and then have to toss it. It will be an add on option.

My only problem with PC is it adds cost on both ends and then it gives me a big headache with warranty claims. If the parts arrive with a scratch in the PC, folks want another one that isn't scratched. That means I have to protect them far more than normal and that burns up space, time, and packing material. PC will double the cost of the kit to the end user.

Doing them in aluminum would be far better and get them done in the same UV black but the price of that is so high now that the cost isn't worth it.

Easy enough to clean, prime and paint. I have like a case of SEM Trim Black.


The PO chopped all the OE connectors off the tail light harness and wired everything with wire nuts. No soldering, no crimp connectors, no tape.. nada. Glad I took the time to wire all the connectors back in. Unplug the Trail Tails and plug in the BMBs.

If anyone has an extra plastic license plate holder thing... I'm going to need a replacement.

I also drilled mine out for shitty Chinesium LED aquariums.

I figured if I need the threads back I can either use nutserts or buy corner armor.

Are they 1/4-20 or something metric? Might as well make sure I have some in stock!

If memory serves I believe the stock mount for the OEM taillights are three dimpled, threaded holes in the body sheet metal. There is no threaded insert, and barely a few threads.

But it’s been a while since I’ve been stock back there, so my memory may be failing me.

Sorry, I can't do that where it matters. I'm behind on a few for some products but they are simple enough that even the folks that can't read figured it out so far.

Been at it since 4am this morning and got them most of the way done except for the step back and read them again without the blurring caused by too much intent screen time. I've got to get a few folks to put eyes on them and see what I fucked up and then they are GTG.

I can promise you that shops by and large believe that instructions are just fancy packing material as evidenced by the vast number of calls I get from them installing brake kits.

You are correct. The OEM mounting is 3 extruded holes in the sheet metal that are used with a Type F thread cutting screw in 12-24 with a captive toothed washer with a 3/8" hex drive. They also ground the light to the body.

There are two options. First is using the threaded holes in the tub. Second option is to use the 1/4" holes in the corners with our optional hardware kit. It has 4 ultra low profile 6mm socket screws with captive tooth washer Keps nuts that will ground to the inside of the tub when tightened for each side. That allows us to use the same ground wire and ring terminal under one of the screw heads like the flat head countersunk screws use.

To be very clear, plug and play is a pay to play option. We'll do it for you but not for free. The instructions will walk you through the wiring and they will be plug and play after that if you pick the DIY option. I sincerely hope we don't have to do too many of the plug and play versions and I've just spent about 30 hours trying to make that true by writing tolerable instructions.
