Painting and Sanding Essentials

That's why doing the prep work and deconstruct and letting Macco do the painting is a good option for people who have never painted and do not have the skills and equipment for a one time paintjob.

I towed an 89 Mustang that was ready to paint to Macco on a dolly and got a great base/clear paint job for $400 when they were running a special.

There are several options for paint. More of them if you have a network of friends that are motorheads.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I'm not dead set at all on using rattle cans, that's just the method a number of the videos I watched used. I do have a sander and a paint sprayer I use for home remodels. I'll try to get some pictures of the rust spots.

For those concerned, I'm also not looking to rush anything and am prepared for a process, that's why I'm spending hours watching videos and why I posted on the forum here. I want to make sure I have the correct approach and the right materials, even if it is just for a diy flat paint job.

And I'll probably need a primer for the hood, which I plan on doing first because the parts that are flaking off actually reveal bare metal

I'm doing a color change on a rust free tub, white to red. All I'm doing is deglazing the paint with red ScotchBrite pads. If you're going to use sand paper 400 grit is all you need if the paint in good condition
The paint is in good condition except on the hood. So I could probably use a pad for most of it but would need a different process on the hood since it's down to bare metal under the flakes.

Try a DIY camo wrap, then get a naked woman to drive you around. Way less work (depending on the woman).

You have to be careful with localized spot sanding and stick with long board where possible. The divots really show up in fresh paint.

Okay, so my hood is flaking down to bare metal pretty rapidly and I really don't want it to rust in these winter conditions before I'm able to do a paint or bedliner job on the jeep. Is there anything I can coat it with in the meantime that will set up in colder temperatures or some type of wrap just to get me to warmer days? I was going to do etch primer but that needs about 20 degrees warmer than what we have here currently.

Remove hood.

Take inside to warm up and do what you need to or take to a paint shop.

I painted engine parts in an apartment bathroom once.

Rattle can primer is fine for temporarily protecting metal, really whatever you spray on there will put the rusting in check, then when ready to paint just sand it off. When I painted cars I would always cover my bare metal overnight with rattle can primer even indoors. Rust starts immediately on bare metal.

Thanks, guys. I'll try to get it peeled and sanded with 400(?) then get it warm enough inside to spray with a primer just to protect it until I'm ready to do the full paint job. Wish it would warm up a bit! 😅

Question for the group: Why has this not rusted already?

Question for the group: Why has this not rusted already?

Just for reference, it only started peeling like this two days ago. I think the decal was already cracking and with the last snow and ice we got it probably expanded and broke up the paint
