This is more of a weird train of thought I had then anything else really. Practical? Nope. Logical? Nope. Easy? Nope. But it would be cool! So as bit of an imaginative run, what would be your input on making a good rally/dakar/baja Jeep TJ?
My thoughts: Start with an LJ I would say. I feel the longer frame would help with high speed stability. Obvious upgrades would be longer travel suspension, a bit of tummy tucking. I like the idea of high clearance low lift builds. So a tad body lift and tuck that powertrain.
Loose the roof, carpet, rear seats, dash, ventilation system, radio and any excess weight. Add in a better seatbelt and maybe seats. Harnesses over belts. Go to half doors. Loose the tailgate (maybe?) and throw a couple tires in the bed. Go to a 33-35 inch tire.
As for the powertrain itself. I would be interested in doing a stroker/turbo build. Giving you that extra power in the higher end of the range. Though LS/V8 swapping would be an easy way to get good power. But why make it easy? Obviously better/stronger regeared diffs. Same for a trans. Probably run an AX-15 or such seeing as you can still buy them new. Part sourcing and all.Custom fuel cell would probably be smart too. Get rid of the plastic and all.
The logistics of doing this are probably very dumb. But gotta let the imagination run sometimes right?
