Recently getting some quotes for re-gearing from a ring & pinion 4x4 shop, $800-900 per axle including all new high quality gears, bearings and seals. Does this price seem fair/reasonable?
Thanks
Thanks
Probably a little regionally dependent, but that's not bad. That's about what we charge and the 4wheelparts an hour away gets about $1500 for G2s.
Whats REM stand for and what exactly is it and are you referring RGA Revolution Gear Axle company?Shops usually quote a higher price than they'll actually accept if you push back saying it's above your budget, being firm by saying something like you can't spend that much. Offer them $1500 total and see if they won't come down if they see you'll sign the order with the right discounted price.
If it were me, I'd specify RGA gears and then tack on $120 to get them treated with the REM process (available from RGA) which will eliminate the need to break the gears in and they'll last longer to boot.
That's what I was quoted , but I outsmarted them , and tackled it myself . I 'll likely have 3,000-3500 hundred in it before it's right.I paid $1,800 out the door for parts and labor so that doesn't seem bad to me.
https://www.revolutiongear.com/rem_surface_finishing which eliminates the need for the usual lengthy gear break-in process, makes them run cooler and last longer. $60 per R&P gearset.Whats REM stand for and what exactly is it and are you referring RGA Revolution Gear Axle company?
. . . Revolution is highly recommended here. However from what I understand, the gear set-up matters much more than the brand of the gears themselves. . . .
And not to scare you, but beware that there are a few Jeeps that are probe to developing driveline vibrations after a re-gear. You'll know only after you regear, no way to predict beforehand. . . . .
Many if not most quality gear shops will refuse to install customer supplied parts. The shops that will install customer supplied parts typically won't warranty the installation labor if the parts fail for any reason. For this reason it is more important to pick a reputable shop than a particular brand or gear supplier and wise to let the gear installer supply the parts. If a particular installer favors one brand over another go with the installer's advice rather than Internet advice - there is nothing magic about Revolution or any other major brand - all will provide good service.
Harmonics or vibrations after a re-gear seem to be isolated to TJ's/LJ's with the 241OR transfer case after re-gearing to 5.13 and 5.38 ratios, however there are some reports of issues in jeeps with the 231 transfer case. The current working theory is that the angle of the double cardan joint in front driveshaft in combination with the driveshaft length can create a harmonic at highway speeds due to the increased driveshaft rpms after the gear change. The harmonic isn't noticeable with taller ratios because the front driveshaft doesn't spin fast enough until one is at very high speed, typically faster than anyone can drive their jeep. My harmonic comes on at about 67-68 mph, and was reduced substantially by adjusting the front pinion angle so that the front driveshaft and pinion angles matched exactly. It is barely noticeable now.
Odd how some get them and some don't. My Rubicon had 4.88 gearing without vibrations and it now has 5.38 without vibrations either. The harmonic balancer isn't even installed.Totally agree on your 1st paragraph. The installation is far more important than the brand of the gears.
I have vibrations (not quite sure if it's harmonic) that developed when I went from 4.10-->4.88 (241OR TC, TJ Rubicon, 42RLE, 265/75R16 tires, 2.5" lift), so it is not limited to 5.13 or deeper gears.

I usually keep the hubs unlocked on the street. But I have to look to see if they're locked or unlocked, there's no difference in feel at all.Out of curiosity do you lock/unlock your manual hubs when driving or just leave them locked?
