$3200 for a re-gear?

I say fuck that quote. If you’re really itching to do gears yourself then that’s an option. Personally I think the time/effort to dollars saved ratio makes doing it myself not worth it for me. If I was planning on doing a lot of gears I may learn it myself. My shop here charged me $300 labor each axle for my gears. This was just a month or two ago. Made the choice a no brainer for me. I used Arizona Differential Specialists.

You and @nk24 both suggested shops that have reasonable rates. I don’t mind taking it to Phoenix to get it done because we are really limited up north on what we have available.

I agree on the time/effort to $$$ ratio. This philosophy has helped me a lot over the years. Some people pay to have their suspension set up. Nothing wrong with that, but that’s something I know I can do on my own, and correctly (tuning my springs and all). Could I do diffs? Yeah most likely, but it’s one of those things I’d rather not do.

Exactly. I know I do a better job on the suspension than a shop would. I would not do a better job on gears. If my options were $3200 or do it myself, I’d do it myself. That’s outrageous.

I wonder if the Jeep rental places in your area might be a good resource? I visited last year and remember seeing at least two. They may do them in house or have a local contact.

Of course, he was quoted two axles to be re-geared. You’ve only got one complete axle.

You also have to give value to the two OE Rubicon axles the OP would have after purchasing complete assemblies, the sale of them can offset costs. How much do Rubi assemblies go for?

That’s true. People go nuts for the fake Dana 44 up front.

FWIW if I ever get to the point of needing locking hubs, I’ll build a 78-79 ford HP Dana 44 vs installing a 1300 dollar hub kit.

Completely agreed.

The difference, to me, is how much time the shop's extensive knowledge and experience with regearing axles is going to save them, versus how long it's going to take me regearing my axles for the very first time.

I'm currently in the market for my 04 LJ so I called and chatted w/Martin.
He quoted $1600 ... and it sounds like he knows his stuff FWIW.
Yea I read nothing but good things about Martin. He’s been in the business for years.

I forgot about Robert at Rwkhaussupply

$950 for both front and rear? You’ll have to call to see what’s included.
Read nothing but good things about Robert as well.

The price doesn't look terrible until you add all those rear bearing parts from Mopar. Damn $200 a side for the bearings? I had the Dana kits when I did mine. That was the seal, bearing, retainer plate and retainer ring. I think they were $50 a side or something like that. Shop rates have gone up. The lease on our little operation in Plano, TX is $13k a month now. Techs all want $80k+ and the insurance is killer.

The price for that is ridiculously high. Why are they replacing rear axle bearings for a regear? That's 200 a pop for the bearings alone. $1500 for labor is ridiculous. Assuming a shop rate of $100/hr, they are saying it would take ~15 hours to do the job. It should not take a reputable shop even close to 15 hours to regear 2 axles. Last I remember getting quoted for a front and rear regear with master install kits and labor was in the 1200-1800 range.

If you think 3200 is ridiculous come to Denver. I was Quoted 5400 by High Octane Performance because they had to change a 75 dollar Carrier.

Try to find a jeeper from a local club who is an expert at doing gear swaps. I brought the new gears and new diff covers and paid $300 labor for both diffs. Of course that was like 20 years ago.

i recently paid $1000 labor for my regear. the parts are what was expensive. gears, master install kits, 30 spline axle shafts front and rear & elockers front and rear.

took jeep back for 500 mile fluid change and the rear elocker had something wrong with it.

shop said it was ok to run open but to not turn on locker. so jeep is back in the shop to have rear locker replaced under warranty.

if there’s one bad apple in the bunch i’m the one that will end up with it. had the same recently happen with a kenwood marine head unit. it was sent off twice for repair before kenwood would refund my purchase price. bought another of the same model and it’s been a solid unit.

I think that anyone who thinks it is a ridiculous price should do it themselves. I did, and I did.

We should start a mutual fuck up society. I can be the president. Without getting into specifics @Mike_H can share what my life as a professional of dealing with fuck-ups is like. I collect that shit like a long haired cat on a cold winter day collects styrofoam beads.

The price doesn’t seem too bad considering most of the cost is for R&G gears, R&G shafts, and Eaton lockers.

Throw in a warranty for the install, and imo, it’s a no brainier for someone who doesn’t have dedicated tools, the required patience, and the time to dial it in correctly…but has a job and CC (if necessary) that can handle the bill over a reasonable period of time.

With front and rear Eaton Locker you have maybe 800 retail and 750 for gear and installation kit. 3-5 hours is all a total switch can be billed for. 800 dollars an hour for labor is highway robbery!
