Rear Spring Relocation Without Adding Height?

@jjvw , @freedom_in_4low, @Mike_H

I tagged you fellas since you're the ones who've been patient enough to guide me through this process.

KYB MonoMax Front
56509625.3115.869.45
Replacing Bilstein 5100 24.00 14.52 9.48

KYB MonoMax Rear
56509723.7415.278.47
Replacing Bilstein 5100 25.00 16.00 9.5" (measured)

Am I in the ballpark? Just want to be sure I'm not outside the usable parameters. Bump stops set up with Bilsteins I'm replacing but I figure minor length differences can be made up with bump 'tuning'. Found these in stock so thought I'd give them a whirl. I'm not 'stuck on' KYB but considered Fox at $150+ per and thought why 'try' a shock at that price. These are pretty low budget for a monotube shock and if I hate them it's not a bank breaker. Considering the heavy load I often carry I'm thinking a little on the firm side might be a good thing.

@Ovaltine suggested earlier in this thread:
"It seems strange to me that you have 5” of lift and are sitting even travel with a 10” shock. You should be able to fit a longer shock based on my experience".
I still need to measure again since I think I might have included the isolator in the 5" measurement and have yet to final measure the rear at its new ride height.
What do the three numbers signify? I get extended and compressed... What is the middle? Ride height?

What's your shock length for each axle at ride height? Apologies if you've posted it, I'm just not in a position to go looking at the moment.
It looks like the shock would be a suitable replacement. You might have to add a bit of bump stop up front, assuming it was set correctly to begin with.

The rears are shorter, so you may be able to remove some bump. Depends where your track bar hits.

I agree with all this, as long as ride height was roughly in the middle with the bilsteins to begin with. I'm pretty sure it was covered earlier in the thread, just didn't want to assume.

Thanks to @97TJNM who went and dragged this out from a previous post.
From yesterday's work cycling the rear, fitting BS, and checking clearances those shocks appear to be within range +- an inch or less after removing the relocation bracket.

Front with ACOS:
Bilstein shocks
19" ride height 4.5" springs
24.25" extended
14.25" full compression
10" shock?
7" shaft showing at ride height.
Doesn't that tell me I had 7" up, 3" down travel?/ Hardly 50/50

W/O ACOS
Removed ACOS and put the springs, shocks and tire/wheels back on. Trackbar disconnected at the axle, Anti-Rock disco also.
New ride height 17".
Driver 4.75" shaft exposed
Passenger 5" shaft exposed
Very close to 50/50 on 10" shock, correct?

The compressed length of the KYB is right in line with an 11" rancho, but with about 1-1/4" less on the extended side. I would (and did) go with the rancho but if he's wanting to use the KYB specifically I doubt he'll miss the downtravel.
I'm sorry guys, I'm all over the frikin' place. Re-reading this one clarifies a bit for me. I just didn't pick up on the 11" Rancho from the forum list.

That is correct. Once I pulled the added height by removing the ACOS and removing the rear relocation bracket and putting the rear springs in the OEM location, the Bilsteins came in very near 50/50. I'm replacing those.

Yes, that is the shock I run and is commonly referred to as 11", though as you point out its technically 10.73".

Why are you thanking me? 🤣 I honestly have no idea what I contributed! Don't get me wrong, I've been watching this thread, because I'm in the process of getting all the parts together to do an axle swap and lift in a few months and hearing real world experience about cycling your suspension is good info, but I haven't contributed anything meaningful to this discussion! 🤣🤣🤣

I just didn't see it and obviously didn't research what you were talking about when you posted it. To be perfectly honest, I'm just barely getting the grasp. I'm done being the bolt on and go type with the new project and I'm finding suspension stuff the PO or his shop didn't get right. 7" of spring lift, BL, TT, MML to run 35s? C'mon man.

So maybe I can stretch my selection of shock lengths. Then it's all about bumping correctly I guess. I don't see me dumping the front in a big ditch (unless for a pose) but ya never know, I might yet hit Moab.

I'm not stuck on a certain brand by any means and shock characteristics is pretty much a "Ginger or Marianne?" question.

Call it serendipity then. Your timing to 'LIKE' one of my posts was pin-point in sync with another participant asking about that data, and when I looked at the post you liked, voila.. there was the data. I didn't have to dig or rifle thru my extensive but messy note pad for it.
..and there are a lot of cycling threads more coherent than mine I assure you.:ROFLMAO:

If those shocks get you close to 50/50 travel from ride height, then they are a good choice. The information is there. I just don't want to do the maths! 🙂

You're in the right forum if you're looking for expertise.
These guys ROCK!
Word! When I purchased a set of used Dana 44s I became a member and asked a few questions. Since then I've been mostly combing threads and trying to soak up as much info as possible. There's some reallllllly knowledgeable people here! I'm sure to be posting a lot of questions in a few months when I begin the real work, though!

Hopefully by then I'll be far enough along to STFU and you can get a word in edge-wise..LOL.
Good to hear you got 44s. Should be fun.

Shopping Black Max now. I should pay attention to my cycling measurements and my math rather than the Skyjacker website lift parameters for their shocks, right?
My lift is 5" possibly slightly less.

The B8525 for the front are nearly exact to the Bilsteins I've been measuring with.

Application Notes for 2006 Jeep Wrangler (LJ) 4WD

  • Black MAX Shock Absorber
  • with Black Boot
  • 24.30 in. Extended
  • 14.52 in. Collapsed
  • Front with 4 in. Lift
  • Front with 4.5 in. Lift
  • Front with 5 in. Lift
However, their rear shocks that match my measurements are listed for 4" lift but closely match my measurements.

Application Notes for 2006 Jeep Wrangler (LJ) 4WD

  • Black MAX Shock Absorber
  • with Black Boot
  • 24.84 in. Extended
  • 14.82 in. Collapsed
  • Rear with 3.5 in. Lift
  • Rear with 4 in. Lift
I wanna pull this trigger and get on with it. If I order these it will be directly from Skyjacker. I don't want any warranty return issues I've read about when purchased elsewhere.

...

Correct. You want 50/50 travel from ride height. Should I type that again? 🤣

Just reaffirming your correctness. Think of the enjoyment you'll have when I get it right. :D
My buddy who's helping me wants to exercise all this new knowledge on his JKU. You're changing the world!

I'm gonna order these things and carry on. I have enough parts in hand or on order and little projects to keep me busy for awhile.
Likely be a snow run first time out.

I used shocks from different lift heights according to skyjacker too...

B8525 up front and B8518 in the rear. That's what worked best for my setup.

Are you on 2.5" OME? Only read the first post in your build recently.
