Spare tire mount for 33s

I am looking for options to mount a 33” tire directly to the tailgate. The stock mount has been removed by PO so I am starting from scratch.

Any advice/pics appreciated. I will be getting a bumper with allowances for a bigger tire.

Thanks for the reply Boogie. Did you need to do anything to your stubbies? My wheel tire combo is 81#, so weight should be fine

you probably will need to extend them. There is a thread somewhere about using harbor freight rubber mallets and longer bolts. I used some 1in PVC, 1in rubber stool feet and longer bolts. Cost about $15 at ace.

Also, each snubber will probably need to be adjusted differently. Get a mix of M6x1 bolts and washers.

Most will suggest MORryde option I think, works great. I have had mine for many years now with 33 but will hold 35 fine too.

I do like the MORryde quite a bit. I got the hinge replacement with tailgate reinforcement as well. It comes with snubber extenders, although you may need additional ones depending on your backspacing. I’ve got a 33 on there with absolutely no issue. It’s rated for a 35 and I’m sure it would handle it no problem.

I installed the moryde tailgate reinforcement and picked up a rugged ridge mount. I did not like how far it was away from the tailgate. I found a stock mount with third brake lite on offer up. I didn’t like the brackets with the moryde that pushed this out and up. I cut the 1” lip off the top of the stock mount that the bolts go through. I welded a piece of flat bar below this then welded flat bar to the bottom mount. This raised the mount as high as it could go in the moryde reinforcement. I adjusted bumper length to hit the tire. The brake light extension is just a flat piece of Abs plastic and 4 pvc kippers cut to length. I am happy with the way this came out and can tell a difference with the tire not hanging way of the back. I also fabricated a latch to hold the tailgate open while on a incline.

I always make sure the weight is off the hinges. The bumper holds it on my current Jeep. otherwise I make a bracket.

I will have to do a Thread on this when I get home this was the only picture I have with me. The angle bracket has a keyhole slot in it, when the gate is opened the bracket drops into keyhole then you lift it up to close it. It all fits inside the hinge.

That looks pretty awesome. It’d be nice to keep the tailgate off my back if I park on a slope.

I recently installed the Morryde tailgate reinforcement kit with heavy duty hinges and have been very pleased.

How much backspacing do your wheels have? How wide are the tires? That will determine what you do with the snubbers.
