Stock Tyre sizes

2002 TJ 4.0 Auto Sahara with 16" rims, stock with no lift.
Currently running 225/70/16 tyres that's roughly 28"x9", and wondering what size I can go up to without encountering rubbing or performance problems.
The Jeep runs 90% on road and the off roading is mainly on muddy tracks rather than rocky trails so the object is to fill the arches better and give a more planted look.
I should explain that here in the U.K. the choice of 16" tyres is much greater than 15"'.
I would very much appreciate any input.

I can't think in metric where tires are concerned but in inches, a 31x10.50 tire fits a stock unlifted TJ. You may have to add a washer to each of the two steering stop bolts to prevent minor tire rub when the steering wheel is cranked all the way to its limits but that's it.

In metric, a 245/75/16 is pretty close to 31" tall. Stock TJ Rubicons used that size, so they fit.

I've been running 235/85 R16 for a year and a half. They're over 31" tall and I've had no problems with them.

My Land Rover runs 235/85R16 so it's good to know that they fit the Wrangler as well.

Thought I'd finish my own thread by sharing the conclusion.
I know from reading many posts in this invaluable forum that the key to a more comfortable ride in a TJ is 26psi in a load range C tyre. For my purposes mild AT is most suitable.
I hunted for the largest tyre, up to metric equivalent of 31x10.50, that I could get in the nearest equivalent to load range C.
My usual go to AT is BFG but they are only available over here in higher load ranges. This was true of all my preferred brands.

Yokohama Geolandar A/T G015 245/70 R16 T(speed rating) 106(load range). That's 9.65 x 29.5 in inches.
Not my usual brand choice and not the largest size, but load range is C ish.
Driving home from the tyre fitters the Jeep felt nervous and jittery. After 15 miles of "I've made a mistake here", I got home to find 35psi in each tyre. Reduced to 26psi test drove and the ride was transformed (hands up all those who thought "Told you so!").
I think that they fill the wheel arches quite well, they've performed well in deep mud and on wet slippery roads, I'll see how well they wear.
So thanks to this forum I've got tyres from a brand that I wouldn't normally consider, in a size that I didn't want, but that do the job very well.

We drive on the correct side of the road in U.K., Australia, New Zealand, Japan and other enlightened states, however when driving in Europe I feel that centre steering would be an asset
The Jeep is a completely stock UK market export model, so I guess that the rims are standard 2001, they were on the TJ when I bought it.
