Test drove a JL today

Drove a buddies JLR a few months back, manual with 37s. Couldn't tell any real loss of power. That 6 Speed is a bit more touchy to get used to than my NSG370. He swore I would stall it the first time I drove it, but nope. Came close though. Also drove a 4 door Sahara with the 2.0. Was amazed at the amount of power that little engine produced on a stock 4 door.

Interesting, 37's and what I am assuming are the stock 4.10 gears.

The new 8 speed makes all the difference. It’s like a JKR with 35s and 4.10s. JLs can turn 37s just the same as a JK can turn 35s with 4.10s

Yea, still 4.10s in the Rubi's. Some nice additions to the JL line. So many electronics though, but I guess I might have to get over that one day.

Word is the 8 speed makes the 3.6 feel even stronger .

One nice thing about the used Jk market...there are more out there than TJ’s and Ljs and less that are thrashed or messed up.

Whereas TJ set up knowledge is now somewhat becoming scarce out there , the jk/jl is in its prime .


While a TJ was a step in the direction of refinement, it kept the CJ feel to some degree . The Jk doesn’t have that “ JEEP” feel , it has new DNA .

This isn’t all bad , it’s why you see them everywhere. They work.

I love my JL. The 8 speed trans feels really nice and it makes the 5 speed trans in my JKU feel almost sluggish. I only have a stock Sport S and it's so much more refined than my TJ and JKU. Now, MSRP was just north of 35k, and the only thing I "upgraded" was the wheels and auto. So, if you want all the electronic goodies, be prepared to fork out a lot of dough. But, I'm super happy

I'm actually getting 24.2 mpg. Now, I'm not heavy on the skinny pedal and I do try to use my cruise, because this thing rides so smooth, I have found myself doing 70 in a 55. I also live in the middle of farm country in Ohio, so YMMV.
I miss my little TJ, but wow, am I happy with this upgrade! I wished they made half doors for the JL. I think they would look sweet!

I recently saw a 4 door Sahara , lifted a little with half doors it was tremendous

I have test driven a 2 door JL Rubicon twice, both were the 3.6 autos. They are nice.

I hear the 2.0 is really nice too. But I have yet to drive one. When I ordered mine, I did so for the 3.6. I'm sure the 2.0 is a fine engine. I just wanted to feel good about the engine since it seems like I have a computerized Lego on wheels I just figured one less thing to (hopefully) worry about!

Good you like the 8 speed trans. I had a new renegade for a year made from FCA line of transmissions and was not happy. It cannot make up it's mind in shifting (selecting the right gear) if my foot is not steady. I spent too much trip doing module flushing at the dealership.

Nice looking Jeep, but seeing that thing packed in a parking space like that reminds me of why I love my TJ so much as a daily driver. It's not nearly as wide as the newer Wranglers, so parking and weaving through narrow streets is always a breeze. Then again, I don't have kids, don't need room for hardly anything in the back, don't care about a quiet ride, and don't care about how smooth or rough is, for the most part so I totally understand why the tradeoff isn't the same for other drivers.
