TJ started making a slight squeak / chirp noise

Your Jeep is an 05 which the 05&06 are known to have squeaking noises caused by the bearing on the OPDA.


Doesn't appear that he can hear anything unless he is driving so it will be difficult to verify/rule that out at the moment
 
Thanks for posting that video. It ran through my mind about the ODPA, I replaced mine with the one recommend a couple years ago. Have done the same in a few tjs and the sound i usually heard was more like a rattling can, and could hear it at idle to pinpoint the noise came exactly from there.
Not saying, this chirp isn't the OPDA. Im still keeping it in my mind.
 
I read a bit on bad Ball joints and symptoms. Clunking noise, wobble while driving etc. None of this is happening, (yet?) She rides smooth, corners smooth. Is the slight squeak a beginning indication for these things to start?
Yes, we'll start with the pullys/belt, I've read the bearings can go out on them
 
Personally, I've never had a squeaking ball joint, only clunking type sounds, but I'm one to never rule out any possibility.

I think you have a good start with the previous recommendations so rule those out before looking further. You ask 10 people, you'll get 10 different recommendations.
 
Hi all. Jeep started making a slight squeak/chirp noise, I listened at idle and it sounded like it was coming from the K&N filter. Was planning on going back to stock anyway, (thank you all for your help). Was hoping it was just a clogged filter. NOT! Over time the sound is more frequent, and unfortunately I can't hear it sitting, with hood up and revving engine. It happens at different times, different speeds, not constant, (yet?) . It is not a loud high pitch sound, more like when brakes squeak. To my eye, belt looks good, not rusted on any pully area. She's got 72,000 well cared for miles. Is there anything I can do, can check to give an idea what might be going on? Any thoughts would be great.
I'm no expert, but I had a problem with a chirping sound when I was in motion. Turns out, the U joint in the front drive shaft was shot, and it was just kickin' around when I was moving. Sounded like marbles swirling around in a glass jar. Wasn't too expensive to fix, though.
 
Thank you. I definitely could tell where the noise was coming from when it was the ODPA, even if it is just slight and starting out, I could really pinpoint it was coming from that area. I could also feel a vibration in my ODPA when mine went out years ago. This particular slight chirping noise was roughly where the k&n filter was.Which was behind the passenger headlight. Which as I'm finding out there is a pully directly to the right of that area. Not sure if it's the alternator pully or the one below.
I wasn't able to hear sound at certain times at idle, so wasn't able to pinpoint, now it is getting worse and when I started her up yesterday I lifted hood right away and it was in that pully area. Would be nice if I could touch those individual pullys as easy as the ODPA cover to be able to feel which pully it really is. I've seen on uTube different ways to feel and transfer the sound, using a tube or long handle screwdriver. But, I haven't worked up the courage to squeeze through that moving area yet. Ha. Maybe later today.
 
Does anyone have a diagram of a 2005 belt/pully system? One that shows what all the pullys are for my 2005 Wrangler. I've seen other year and makes of vehicles, but they said each year and make of car the pully system is set up different.
 
What is a good timing belt? The quieter the better.

Tensioner?
And I think I seen another type of pully around the tensioner, not sure what that's called.
I read that one of these it is best to get the OEM.
 
There is an idler and tensioner pulley.
I replaced the idler with an OEM Mopar and then rebuilt the old one by pressing out the old bearing and pressing in a new one from Grainger.
You can spray a little WD40 or similar on the Idler pulley bearing to test if it quiets down during operation.

I’ve had two of the idler pulleys go bad, both within 100k miles. The good news is that they are cheap and easy to replace.
