Is it normal for the transfer case shifter to have lateral play? It's nice and tight pulling up and down into 2H-4H-4L and engages properly but the lever has side-to-side play and makes a clunk when going over bumps.

That looks normal. You can see the mechanism if you look up from under the Jeep.

Mine fell apart so I went cable shifter.

the side to side is normal because there is a lock out between 4hi and neutral that you need to pull over to the right.

Okay, just another noise I need to get used to I guess. I've only been a Jeep owner since the start of the pandemic but logged 7k miles in it. It has a similar sounding clunk of a broken sway bar end link...which I already have in the ensemble of creaks and groans.

I will look into cable shifter but I need to defer upgrades until I fund the gas tank skid replacement. Seriously living on borrowed time for that.

Just take a look at the shift mechanism from underneath. It may be working itself apart.
