How large is the dead spot in your steering box? It's probably alignment but if the box has a huge dead spot in the center that could cause it.

It’s almost nonexistent ...you can drive 70 with one finger. It’s just road crown has to be steered against.

Sounds like alignment then, I've driven in a jeep with a loose box and it almost felt like snow boarding. You had to always be steering one direction or the other to keep pressure on the steering.
