Wheel and tire question

For looks purpose only and no off-roading do you guys recommend a 2 inch body lift or suspension lift?

If it's purely looks and zero off-roading at all, then you'd be fine with a body lift. However, 2 inches of space between the body and frame is going to be quite an eyesore.

31x10.50R15 tires will fit on a stock 15x7x 5.5 Jeep wheel. Most tires of that size require a minimum rim width of 7". 5.5" of back spacing may put the tire into the suspension at full wheel lock under some circumstances. That can easily be corrected by adjusting the steering stops. One or two washers usually does the trick. Wheels with 4" - 4 1/2" of backspacing does the trick as well.

That wheel and tire combination fits under a non-lifted Jeep TJ for most normal usage, both on and off road. All bets are off if you try to hammer it off road though.

If the TJ is an SE, you may want to think about regearing eventually with 31" tall tires. The four banger is very sensitive to gear ratios. You'll know soon enough just by driving it.

I like those wheel caps, where did you get them?

I don't know, this is not my jeep. I have 16" Moab wheels on my 2002 TJ. However; these are the stock Ravine wheels (I believe they came on 04', 05' and 06' TJs and LJs). The center caps are not original as far as I can tell since they aren't stamped with the word "Jeep". The wheels and caps look like they have a chrome type of coating applied to them.

So let me add another tire question: everyone says I can go up to a 31" tire, but when I go to do online pricing, I get dimensions like:

225/75R/15

Where's that 31"?

15 is the rim dimension, right?

How can I find the tire height (assuming that's the 31") when shopping online. I was on the Goodyear site, and they are very confusing to say the least :(

Update: This actually was helpful:

Most online retailers have 31's available. You just need to scroll past all the 225 , 235 and 265 (etc.) to where it says 31. It should read as 31/10.5/15 or 31x10.5x15. 10.5 is the section width in inches. And 15 is the wheel diameter.

The equation for converting metric to english is: ((width/25.4)*sidewall as a percentage)*2 + Wheel Size

For example, using your size above this would be: ((255/25.4)*.75)*2 + 15 = 30.05" if it runs true.

Eventually as you search enough you'll get familiar with how the metric ones size out to english equivalents.

I was decent at math, but was never good at memorizing US - metric conversions. Would rather ditch ours and go metric - it's all multiples of 10! Easy!

10 millimeters in a centimeter
10 centimeter in a decimeter
10 decimeters in a meter
100 meters in a kilometer

10 milliliters in a centiliter
10 centiliters in a deciliter
10 deciliters in a liter
10 liters in a kiloliter

Etc., etc., etc....

But no, we'd rather go with:
12 inches in a foot
3 feet in a yard
5280 feet in a mile
4 quarts in a gallon
5 pennies in a nickel
2 nickels in a dime
2 dimes and a nickel in a quarter
4 quarters in a dollar
And those are only the common ones! Then we have pints, teaspoons, tablespoons, ounces, acres, hectares, leagues, nautical miles...

No wonder kids education stinks anymore...they CRS when it comes to history, government, and all that, so how can we expect these twenties to learn our archaic weights and measures?!?!

Egan, I'm turning into my dad, next thing ya know I'll be in a rocking chair telling kids to slow down, get off my lawn, and to stop blasting that damn music. :O
