Basket's Build

The 4 speed is simply an Atlas 2 speed case with a planetary gearset in front. The planetary is always 2.72:1. You select the ratio in the main case, and the combination of the two is what creates the 4 speeds.

2 shifters control the main case - exactly like a 2 speed - and a 3rd shifter controls the planetary.

Doesn't add as much as I expected to the price, they give you a decent deal for it being already filled with gears vs the doublers by themselves. I did think it would be way more

I’ll get it right someday. 🙄 Got to keep me straight. 5:1 in the Atlas though! Nailed it. 🤣

Hard to forget those twin sticks.

I'd be in a similar bind as you if the nv3550 went out. I'd need to regear to 5.13 just to keep my 1st gear crawl ratio.

Auto swap isn't in my cards. I like shifting too much.

If you want to get fancy - read:expensive - and create a way shorter driveline when compared to stock, put an Atlas 2.0 behind a Rubicrawler. 4 speeds, and a much longer driveshaft…

Atlas is shorter than the 241/231? Sounds nice, my jeep is too old though really

I have never driven any jeep but my own. I don't honestly know if I'd be okay with the manual with lower gears. I thought automatic was the way to go. Maybe I should beg people in moab to let me try an auto and a manual with better gearing.

The rubicrawler can go in front of a 231, 241, or an atlas, but the transmission has to be the 42RLE if I'm not mistaken, because it replaces the 42RLE tail shaft housing.

That is correct. It’s the ultimate reason I bought two 42rle rigs.

I have a lot to think about after all this today.

Maybe I will start paying attention to prices and see what it would take to get into an LJ with an automatic.

I'm also second-guessing my thinking that an automatic would be better to do before a new tcase or new gears.

Prices have been coming down across the board on all models of the TJ the last few months. Stock and already moderately built. You never know you might find something built similarly in the direction you're wanting to go for not much more than it would cost you to build it...

True, also means my jeep is worth less when I sell it lol. So kinda a wash. I wonder if I'd end up feeling like I had to buy a rubicon.

I haven’t read through everything, so apologies if missed something, but if you’re so undecided why not just build your axles first?

You’re going to build them eventually anyways, so why not wheel it and see if you can make the manual work with lower gearing/lockers?

It's tempting, but you don't really want the same ratio for any of the transmissions I'm considering. So it's kinda non-ideal to choose a ratio now when I'm undecided there, I suppose is why.

Yes maybe but also no, if you're looking at 10 to 15 thousand for everything you want to do on your TJ, and you find an already built TJ or LJ in that price range you're money ahead if you sell your TJ...

True. Maybe I'll spend some time fixing things that would make it easier to sell, like the hardtop. I'm sure I'd enjoy that stuff being fixed too

That makes sense. Can you do the regear yourself?

If so, even if you do have to regear later, the parts cost and labor time would be significantly less than doing a trans swap or building a new Jeep in the first place.

I won’t talk you out of an auto LJ tho ;), just trying to see what’s the option with the smallest opportunity cost.
