How To LS Swap Your TJ

Serious question -

How fun is having that engine?

Is it hard to handle the power with the short wheelbase or a who cares it’s a v8 get out of the way deal?

To me it seems like it’s a ball.

It's worth every penny... it made my sluggish couldnt get past 72mph a solid fun jeep to drive ... yes there are challenges but it was totally worth it.

PS - I'm still working on the air intake, hood louvers, and 15 other things.

So its really not as much power as you would expect with a stock 5.3 but it does accelerate way faster and can win a few redlight races. Very easy to handle when giving it gas, though for a month I had no rear sway bar and I could feel the front corner lift when accelerating hard. Gotta be careful in ice because it will spin tires quickly and lose control. Its great on the highway though, no need to down shift to pass and keeps up with 80+mph traffic easily. But its a blast in the dunes!

The neat thing I found in taking an 05 Tahoe LM7 5.3L that was ruinned... and doing a proper hone (took it out .002) and changing the pistons and used Truck Norris Cam...

I gained 100Hp at the rear wheels over stock LM7 and almost 200 over the 4 cyl. Only cost me 2500 to acquire and rebuild the engine (machine shop, parts, & Labor)

Plus, it's more reliable because I broke the engine in correctly.

@XCRN Thank you for this thread. This answers a fair amount of questions and may be useful over the next 10 months if things work out.

k, figured it out. I don't have sufficient posts to get that feature enabled. I did see your private conversation, but it was locked and I could not reply. I'll figure this out. :)

20 posts. What’s your favorite color?

You need to get your Magnum swapped TJ going.

That way I can drive it and see if I want a Magnum V8 or an LS in mine 🤪

Magnum is easier and can be cheaper sometimes but the HP difference between a Magnum and LS isn't even close. But HP isn't everything.

I hope that saga draws to a close this summer

Let's hope so.

I kind of want to Mag swap a YJ for a stupid reason. I think the Mag has that retro look to it that matches the style of the YJ but still EFI drivability. Would make for a cool hot-rod IMO. I just did LS because the motor was free and the truck I parted out for it paid for most of my swap. I really want to get a TDI for my LJ now.

I have a few hardcore buddies running stretched Magnum YJ’s. Definitely awesome rigs that I have trouble keeping up with.

Nice nice. What did you use for coolant extension tank? How did you route the lines from transmission to radiator?

Part of me would like to keep it all Chrysler.

But the other, far more logical part of me says..

Why?

The Magnum isn't a bad engine by any means but the aftermarket support isn't there like for a LS.
The two major issues with a Magnum are the heads and the cam. Get it breathing better and they make some decent power.
The biggest thing for me is that you don't need additional things to make your stock dash work. Plus it bolts up to your t-case without any adapter.

At least you're coming around ;)

But to be fair

A 5.3 iron block will have similar numbers to a magnum.

Keep dreaming... never....

You know what I'd pick any day of the week.

Yep. I'd love to eliminate 98% of everything chrysler that isn't body and frame.then put a cj style flat dash and steering column in my tj!

Bare minimum chrysler electronics for lights and no more chrysler hvac.
