Hey guys, I have a 1998 Sahara and want to get the 2 inch BDS lift. I want to run 32s and I was wondering if there is anything that I need other than the springs and shocks. Thanks.

I’m open to other options as well, but I want to spend about $500 on the lift. Anyone have custom setups. I was looking at the 3” BDS kit with 33s, but I want to be able to go at least 65 on the highway. I will be doing light off-roading every one in awhile. Please post pictures of your setups too. Thanks

I run the BDS 2" coils, 1.25" spacer in front, Rancho 5000X shocks. I ended up a touch less than 3" in front and 2.25 in rear. Ride is great, flexes well off road. Someone else here went 3" coils for front and 2" in rear which is a great way to go. Front needed 2" of bumpstop, rear 1.75" but I ran them at 2" instead of cutting off 1/4".
In addition, I run a JKS adjustable track bar in front and a relocation bracket in rear, as well as JKS disconnects.
I run 31's, 33's will need 3.5" to clear 33's. The BDS coils and a 1.25" body lift would work well together.

I am planning on doing the same setup for my 2005 X RME. BDS 2”, 15x8 wheels -22 offset, and 32x11.5xR15 A/T tires. Will also do the steering stabilizer and JKS links. This should be good for on-road performance and mild off-road performance, but won’t have enough clearance for more serious off-reading. Front wheel clearance should be about the same as stock if your wheels have a decent offset to compensate for the wider tires. I have the 3.73 Dana 44 rear axle and I don’t want to run bigger than 32’s so I can keep my on-road acceleration and fuel economy reasonable. I’m like you...going to the 3” lift gets much more expensive and can start to get a little more risky with the change in geometry. I just want to empty one pocket, not every pocket! LOL. I also want to swap my DP/cats and install a cat-back to replace the original exhaust, so I need to keep some $ freed up for that. My original goal was to buy/build a rust-free TJ running the 2” lift and 32’s for about 15k. I’ll probably be at 16-17k by the time I am done though. I’m calling my build OEM+. Re-gear the axles to regain the stock power and torque if you want to do it “right.”
You may not realize it or taken into consideration the added weight and rolling resistance from going up in tire size, but it’s there and a re-gear should go hand in hand with a lift and increase in tire size.

Piss poor planning will result in piss poor performance. You are doing it right and asking the right questions. But you may need to read a little more in depth in re-gearing the axles. 33s on a Jeep can go 65 and more...

Thanks. It looks like I will be running the same exact setup as you. I also have the Dana 44. Idk about gearing, but I wanted to make sure 32s will fit. I still don’t know what brand of tires yet though. I only have one pocket to empty. LOL

Good point on the added weight. Another reason I am going 32’s and not 33’s. I am also making sure I go with a 19-20 lb alloy wheel and not the 28lb steelies. 33’s look cool, but the 32’s with 11.5 width and decent wheel offset look almost as cool and are a more reasonable choice for the OP and folks like myself.

So true, I looked at so many modified Jeeps when shopping and your first sentence categorizes most of the modified rigs I came across! 3.07 gears with 33’s, 3.73 with 35’s etc. My search quickly turned to only looking at clean stock Jeeps. You never know what you are getting into with a stocker let alone something that has been modified, wheeled hard etc.

I’ve been quoted 1,000 to 1,500 for my Dana 44. I may also do this later on. I have a manual 6spd, so I am hoping I won’t be tempted to if I stay on the 32’s as I plan to.

About $1200. The optimal gears is entirely dependent on your transmission and choosen tire size. Don't be afraid to go lower than you think is correct.

Cost depends on your factory differential setup.
  • If Your Dana 30 Front is Setup For 3.54 or Numerically Lower, You Will Need To Replace It With a Carrier For 3.73 and Numerically Higher
  • If Your Dana 35 Rear is Setup For 3.07 Gears, You Will Need To Replace It With a Carrier for 3.54 and Numerically Higher

In the Jeep/offroad world, most use the term back spaceing. Stock wheels are between 5-5.5". 4-4.5" is a good amount for larger tires. With my wheel adaptors, I am at 3.5" of back space.

Gears and master install (parts) would be $590. Labor would be dependent on where you go to get it done.

Parts could possibly be found cheaper.. but like I suggested earlier, you need to do some more in depth reading on regearing your factory setup.

There might still be a metal tag on your diff cover. It is most likely 3.73. You can also count the drive shaft rotations compared to wheel rotations and do the math.

Grimmjeeper.com is the best gear calculator. Play around with your options. I geared my daily driver so that it's 75mph is at 3000k rpm. I like it.
