It spreads out the load, so that is a key part of the design too.
So in summary, you can order just the HD wide-swing hinges, which mount to the stock bolt locations. Then, if you so desire later, to accommodate a larger, heavier tire, you can order the rest of the reinforcement plates, one for the tailgate, and one for behind the hinges, along with the triangular brackets, to beef up the whole system.
