Rock Sliders / Rocker Guards Guide

Great information guys!
With the new fenders im in need of new sliders. The bar on mine goes ww2ww and I don’t want the cut the flares. For me it’s better to have and not need so its between GR and Savvy.

GR mini boats requiring you to use a BFH or cut the bottom of the tub to fit has me apprehensive. So I’m leaning towards Savvy’s. Although I’m not crazy about drilling 40 more holes I understand why that what it takes. Well I don’t really understand but anyway.

What part of the number of holes needed is difficult to understand? If you cut your tub to install the boat sides, you would be very sad at the result. The inner floor attaches to that edge that gets folded under at a 45 degree angle and you would lose that attachment.

@mrblaine or @Jerry Bransford did Savvy stop offering the SS slider? Would you care to share why?

Like most things, folks didn't understand the value of it and absolutely require some sort of a step even if it was a crappy one.

I went through 600+ post waiting to see the two step versions but never did. Regardless if they came into production or not I would like to see what you came up with if you wouldn’t mind. On the website it is called a “step slider” but as you’re aware time is not wasted on pictures. Is the original design still being sold or it one of the designs with a step?

When the Savvy sliders were introduced and how well they worked was being discussed, there was post after post of folks saying "that's awesome but I have to have some sort of a step so they look and work like the rest of the shit out there". No amount of explaining or examples to the contrary would quiet down the insistence on a step. Gerald finally said to build a step with a tube. No problem. I designed a couple, one with a removeable step section so options could be made for different types of steps. There was another and small test runs of each were built. None of them sold. They were all finally given away as promotional items and discontinued.

Any chance you have the installation instructions you could email me? I would like to go though it this weekend if possible. Thanks
I've never had any to send out. Sorry about that and I know some exist, I just don't know where to find them.

Yeah I just can’t bring myself to beating the crap out of the tub to fit the mini boatside. I’m sure they’re are a great slider, just not for me. There is just no going back once you go there.

In that thread it was post after post on a step version so I was just curious. I don’t need a step but the wife might disagree. Thanks for digging up the old pictures.

There’re already 10 holes on each side so another 20 is overwhelming. Taking it to a body shop to have them filled starts running through my head.

Thanks for your time and the pictures! Maybe Gerald still has a SS around I’ll ask.

He does not. Don't worry about the holes.

We do some installs where a couple different brands and hole spacings of slider have been installed previous.

A step doesn’t help. If you look at the height of the floor tub where you step inside and compare that with the step height, the step is HIGHER. So if people want to step higher , fine, get a step, otherwise just get a normal slider. It took me a long time to figure this out.

I agree with you 100%. That’s exactly how I get in with the use of the grab bar. I actually think the savvy slider will make it easier because it’s more narrow. I’m also lowering the lift so that helps.

Never understood why that is so hard to figure out. Kat is 5'-2" tall and got in and out of our crawler on 40" tires and about 4" of lift on the trails in JV hundreds of times without a step.

Nope, narrow step won’t help. Yep, lower lift will.

How would the Savvy aluminum rockers hold up if you removed the steel step and used an aluminum bar like you did on the recent build? Is the steel backer needed in that area?

Do any of his restorations slam the rockers into rocks with any degree of force?
Just curious, because wouldn't that build more of case for a gasket between the tub and the back of the slider?

How often are people “slamming” into rocks? Well, other than rock bouncers. Those guys really push the limits down here on parts. Sorry to derail.

It all has to do with how fasteners work. When you attach a tub mounted rail to the side of the body, you don't want anything to interrupt that connection. I do suspect though that with how easy the sheet metal deforms, that it will push the gasket out of the way and get as tight as it needs to be.

We slam into rocks all the time without being rock bouncers. Trying to get up a fall and tire slips off the line and you fall over or drop. Something has to catch you, generally it is the rock rails.

I found these instructions for the Savvy sliders online. @mrblaine are these the right ones?
