Carpet: yes or no?

Buying a 2004 this week with no carpeting. It has floor mats. Should I leave as is or replace it? It can be replaced for around $300.

It will be used primarily as a beach jeep in the sand and to go to the lake on the weekend.

The minimalist in me says keep as is.

I've removed my carpeting 3 times over the past 22 years and 3 times I put it back in after a day or two. Why? Without the carpeting the heat from the ultra-hot catalytic converter comes up through the floor just to the right of the console under the floor. It gets MUCH hotter inside without the carpeting to help insulate the floor. It's also a hell of a lot quieter inside with carpeting for added insulation and sound-deadening against noise too.

I run without carpet. @Jerry Bransford is right, lots of heat and noise. If you run without I'd put 3M grip tape like they use on stairs at your feet so you don't slip getting in and out. It wears like iron and looks pretty good too if you cut it out nicely. Bed rug sounds great too. I think they also have a smooth version called bed tread.

ACC carpet is the thickest. And provides the most heat and sound protection. It also runs around $300. Bedrug is good too. Just more like an indoor outdoor carpet but more expensive. Alot of guys run the Bedrug as it's easier to take out and hose down. ACC is more like premium carpet you'd find in a luxury car. Sounds like you might like the bedrug stuff better. You can find it with a simple google search. Alot of places sell it.

I use Bed Rug, the material it's made of doesn't adsorb water so you don't have to worry about mildew. It helps with sound and heat insulation as well. I plan on eventually applying the sound and heat insulating paint from lizard skin to help further.

I took my carpet out for the first time a few weeks ago, and bedlined the tub. With the soft top on, I don't notice a concernable amount of extra noise or heat inside.

Those are the ones I linked too. They even have kick panel covers. You also have to order long or short console. And whether or not you want additional matting under the carpet for sound deadening. I have read that ACC carpets are cut large to accomodate any installation. Meaning you'll have plenty of carpet on the edges to cut and make a custom fit with. Insuring complete coverage.

Personally I'd spend the money of sound deadener if your concerned about heat and noise. (But it's not for your water and mud loving brothers.) That and ACC carpet would get you the least heat and noise into your cabin. Noico from Amazon would be the most recommended sound deadener.

Bedlining isn't going to give you near the heat and sound protection as actual sound deadener, a heat shield and good carpet. HEat shield can be found here www.carinsulation.com

But if you're mudding or traversing waterways. I don't see how you can do much more than bedlining. Just bedlining will be very loud. Compared to the above. But again, if you expect water or mud. I don't see anyway around bedlining only. Unless you get bedrug and want to pull it everytime. Wash it. And leave it out in the sun to dry.

I'm not a fan of carpets but it is quiet, cool and it keeps stuff from rattling around. I just wish TJ rugs were as durable and easy to remove as YJ rugs.

Reviews comparing the two aren't very definitive. Meaning I'm not seeing any saying "OMG. This Lizard Skin is better than mat."

I can't find any reviews that say the Lizard skin products are more effective at sound deadening than Dynamat or similar i.e. - Noico, Second Skin etc. But I can't find any that say it's worse either. I don't think any definitive research exists that proves Lizard Skin is more effective than mat. So I would use it with caution. I just can't tell for sure if your going to get an outcome that's better than mat. Or mat and heat shield. (Mat does provide heat shielding as it's aluminum backed. But I prefer actual heat shielding as mentioned above. It cuts 97% of heat.)

Lizard Skin sound deadener seems to be a fairly new product. And not one I've seen anyone do at home themselves. But I'm sure it can be done. I do find reviews that say spraying the Lizard Skin products can be very difficult. That you might want to use a professional. And that mat is alot easier to install. Price has to be alot more expensive Noico vs Lizard Skin.

(I would never refer anyone to Dynamat. As it is WAY overpriced. I'm using Second Skin. But Noico is about the same and even cheaper. For comparison's sake I would compare Lizard Skin to a better than average mat sound deadener. And Noico and Second Skin are better than average.)

But I would think if you coupled Lizard Skin with Bedrug carpet that you could take out and wash. You'd have a winning combination for mud and water. I've not seen anyone use the Lizard Skin heat and sound proofing products at home. But if you've got a shop, an air compressor and area to do it. I say go for it.

I'm just not a big fan of heavily sprayed products like this. And I don't go in mud or water. (Meaning mud bogging or big stream crossings.) I'd rather the easier, cheaper do it yourself option of a mat. But like I say YMMV. Pricewise. I think the last time @Chris did his. It was something like $120 in materials to use Noico. I would assume Lizard Skin is alot more expensive. As just the sound deadener is $130 a pail. Then you've got the other products to go over it.

I think the big difference is if you want to go thru water and mud or not. If not, I'd stick with mat like Noico. If so, and you've got the bucks, space and time. I'd say try the Lizard Skin.

I have a large compressor but not only do I hate painting I'm also not very good at it. I'm not doing anything anytime soon. I'll look into that insulation you linked previously because even with bed rug it still gets hot in the foot-wells.
Is there any sound or heat insulation gained from bed lining? Or is it really just for corrosion/rust resistance?

I removed my carpet a year or two ago, bed lined the inside of the tub with upol raptor liner and haven't looked back. It does get hot behind the pedals but I avoid the area with my bare feet. I like being able to quickly and easily hose the jeep out after getting it dirty. That said if it was a daily driver I would probably leave the carpet in and just pull it out and pressure wash it after I get it really dirty.

I'm surprised how many carpet fans there are out there. My TJ came to me without it & it never crossed my mind to put it in, particularly with the way I ass it up every time I'm off road, the next day I usually get out the leaf blower & 'clean' it , there's just no way I want to be dealing with carpeting. But then again, when I moved into my house 20+ years ago the first thing I did was to rip every square inch of that crap out so I guess I've got a problem with it generally. A few area rugs inside are ok, so are rubber hose-able mats for the TJ

It sounds like Lizard Skin has a bedliner product, a sound product and a heat product. But maybe I'm mistaken about that. I don't think bedliner alone has much heat and sound deadening properties. Some probably. But not nearly as much as mat. There's even thicker mat for putting down over Noico aluminum backed type sound deadener. That heat shield is one of them. But @Chris also used a heavier mat over his Noice that was like a half inch thick of foam rubber. Or something similar. There is a technical term for this heavier matting. I think it's called acoustic matting or something like that. I don't recall off hand.

Perhaps the Bed Tred could be the answer. It is supposed to be like a spray in bed liner, but removable. That way you get the best of both. At least I hope so. I just ordered it. I'm not a fan of carpet in a truck. In a car is fine. In a truck, no. Every truck I've owned I pulled the carpet to have the ugly 1 piece rubber floor liner. Trucks are supposed to get muddy and dirty. If they dont then get a car. This is my opinion only. If you like your truck all fancy that is fine by me.
