so guys after owning the jeep for 1 week i already expierenced heat soak even in 85 degree weather ,todays temps was about 102 where i live and let me say i do alot of stop and go driving in the city not alot of highway driving , i did research and from what i read everyone keeps mentioning that the stock cooling system is perfect for these cars, and no need for a extra fan ...

would adding a auxiliary cooling fan be ok to do FOR HEAT SOAK after i turn off the car with some type of relay for 3 min or so

i have been expierencing alot of (i get off go to the store do what i got to do and get back in the car and very bad idle for a couple of seconds) and in 80+ degree weather now today that it was 102 when i did the same thing this time i got a check engine light immidieatly and misfire cyl 3 and very very bad idle car ran bad for a few minutes intill finally it went away.

plan with this jeep is to obviously take it off roading in SLOW speeds in hot temps for example i wanted to go this weekend and where i wanted to go is about 108 or so now idk if thats a good idea to go since im expierencing heat soak at 102.

i already ordered the heat sheild i ordered the fuel rail heat shield and the injector heat sheilds they get here sunday.

BUT i want to add extra cooling fan when i just feel like the temps are a bit crazy. or when offroading at slow speeds in hight temps etc. and when jumping out the jeep to run to the store i can have a fan atleast helping for a few minutes so when i do jump back on my car it doesnt feel like crap and check engone light etc.

for example i wanted to drive this thing to vegas since i go over there very often, my concern is desert traffic in baker at 117 degree weather,
im assuming an auxiliary cooling fan SHOULD help or am i wrong?

my gfs and my bmws when shutting off the car the fan still stays on for a while to help cool down engine and turbos .

this guy mentiones a fan will be the best bet.

i mean im sure this is not a problem during the winter but as they say each summer from now on is only going to get worse and worse in heat temps☀🔥

I previously owned a '98 XJ where I used the A/C condenser fan as an auxiliary cooling fan while rock crawling and in REALLY hot weather IF I needed the additional cooling. The condenser fan had a switched ground when used in the A/C system so I wired in a relay to manually switch the ground lead. That additional cooling worked perfectly.
Due to the lack or room; the electric fan would need to be a small pusher fan in front of the radiator.

so thats kinda of the idea i have maybe a 12 or 10 inch push fan that can sit in front of the radiator/ where the grill is at

You would need to source a fan, design a way to mount it and test to see if it didn't obstruct air flow thru pulled thru the radiator while driving around town or pushed thru when driving on the highway. That fan would perform the function of an auxiliary cooling fan.
The only other thing you could do would be to remove the clutch fan and find an puller electric fan with the proper CFM and wire in a thermal relay to keep the engine cool.
In the XJ community they had a problem locating a fan (s) with enough air flow and durability to keep the engine cool. There were several designs, but with limited success due to relays and fans burning out.

you think if i add a 10 inch fan in front of the radiator it will block air flow when it is not on.

if i do put one on it will be a PUSH fan to flow the air the same direction as the oem fan basically they will both be spinning the same way

Are you aware of the TSB out for "heat soak" affecting in particular the #3 injector? You don't indicate what year your Tj is, but if this applies to yours it would be a lot easier and cheaper than adding a fan...

When I purchased my '01 Sport 4.0L in January the TJ had not been taken care of very well so I replaced the 1 hole injectors with 12 hole and installed those insulators. There was a noticeable difference in how the engine restarted on a hot day.

I drive in Death Valley regularly and don't have issues. Many others here do as well. If everything is working well you wont have problems. If you are having heat soak issues wrap the injector as @rouxbicon suggests. It is also possible your fuel pump or regulator isn't holding pressure when you shut off the Jeep, that will also cause hot start issues.

A fan will probably help prevent heat damage to some components under the hood after you shut the engine off similar to hood vents. I don't think it's needed but I guess it couldn't hurt. I wouldn't want a dead battery in those conditions so I probably wouldn't install a high current fan that runs after the engine shuts off. An electric fan in front of the radiator will not effect the factory fan or cooling while the engine is running, it is way too powerful to mind small obstructions.

For heat soak there's no reason the fan has to move air through the radiator. Any air movement in the engine bay will disturb the stratification that concentrates the heat at the injectors. Could probably mount a smaller one over near the intake manifold somewhere, just need to achieve some air flow across the injectors.

I have driven thru DV numerous times in the '98 XJ 4.0L and found it necessary to use the condenser fan as an auxiliary cooling fan in the summer months (>110*) while crawling up certain obstacles. Driving thru DV was more enjoyable during the cooler months (<100*). Baker has that larger thermometer for a reason; to remind you that you are a few miles from HELL....

i just installed that uesterday and also ordered another kit from amazon that comes with a rail heat sheild and injector heat sheild and also the other shield that goes by the manifold and yes it is a 2002 is cyl 3 i did my research and already went ahead and ordered that

but i want to do one more step to help it more

i might end up doing this in the near future because man today is about 102-105 and honestly the jeep feels like complete crap lol is way tooo hot i think i mean it runs fine no check engine light nothing but you do feel it slugish from all the heat i feel like the fan aint doing enough lol or idk for example my bmw the fan is spinning so fast in these temps while these fans are only spinning when you hit the gas

what year is your tj

i want to add a aux fan in front kinda where the condensor is at did you add your fan or?

Yesterday I drove about 45 miles to my friends house in Valley Center; the temperatures were 100*+.
While on the highway and level side roads with the A/C on; the engine temperatures were slightly under 210, but when I started up the steep grade to his area the engine temps slowly climbed to 220* and hovered. I decided to switch off the A/C and tolerate the 100*+ heat.
My TJ is a 2001, but the Jeep that I did the fan work on was my 1998 XJ 4.0L.

yeah these summers are only getting hotter

today here is about 102 103 and driving around the city with ac full blast because i have the soft top
no bueno i mean it drives fan but i do feel it a bit on the slugish side or i feel it ideling a bit higher maybe to spin the fan a bit faster etc. i decided not to drive it these next couple of days ill just drive my other car.

or i find some type of better solution for a slightly better cooling solution

i get my heat shields tomorrow so ima install that tomorow and see if that helps i also ordered a small 10 inch fan but idk if im going to install it tho i need to see if thats the right move or just leave it alone

The heat kills power in a big way. When you drag race you calculate a normalized time and speed depending on the local elevation, pressure, temperature and humidity. The difference between a cool evening at 65 and 110 is massive. That doesn't even factor in your fan howling like a banshee. Power loss in the heat is normal, there is no way to avoid it.

An electric fan will do nothing to help while you are driving. If you haven't replaced the fan clutch very recently you could do that, new ones cool much better especially for the first year or two before they wear in (or out depending on how you look at it). The new fan clutch will rob you of even more power on hot days but you might get the A/C to run better.

You could do a ford windstar intake mod. Won't really help w/ underhood temps but you'll get "cooler" air to the TB.

So guess what guys lol

so today I went around the city to do some errands is 104 I come home park it under my garage And let it sit to later find out my radiator blew up it cracked open and spilled all my water maybe an hour later or so

so now I need a radiator you guys

this plastic one was the oem one from 18 years ago never been replaced so yeah

oh also I don’t think this Jeep has ever seen this type of heat it comes from a colder state

good thing the engine was off and I wasn’t driving while it happened

it happened in my back yard under the garage

Glad it wasn't worse. Radiators are cheap compared to head gaskets and engines.

thats for sure dude good thing it didnt happen to me while driving

well now is a good excuse for an upgraded alluminum

anybody reccomend a good brand that i can order asap
