Gear Change 4.56

You have the tricky transmission to offer gears for. 4.10 and 4.56 are the two good recommendations. You have a lower overdrive (.84, meaning 5-6% higher rpm than the .78 and .79 AX15 and NV3550).

4.10 would put you very close to where 4.56 is with the 5-speeds, and 4.56 would put that rpm a little higher on the highway. Personally I would go with 4.56 for the little bit of extra power.

I've found that even guys at "Jeep places" are pretty clueless, regardless of how long they've been installing gears or dealing with Jeeps or whatever it is they do at the Jeep place.

As far as overgearing is concerned, I would MUCH rather be overgeared than undergeared. The only thing overgearing will hurt is maybe the MPG a tiny bit if you love to drive way too fast. Otherwise it'll just give you more power at the expensive of some negligible rpm unless you're extremely overgeared.
How bad would I be suffering if I just go to 33's now and then do the gears later? I'm sure that sounds so newbie!

@JMT, I would go 4.56 with the 6 spd and 4.0. You'd be looking at 2750 or thereabouts at 70 in 6th. The cool part about the NSG370 is the low first gear, so no issue at take off with 4.56 and 33's.

The low first with 3.73's and 33's probably won't be horrible but certainly not ideal.

Since you have the 6-speed, it won't be terrible although it's not ideal of course. It'll be similar to having 4.10 and 33's with the 5-speed which does require downshifting on hills, but it's not the end of the world. It could be much worse, such as if you had 3.07.

I went about a year on 33's with my 5 speed and 3.73's. Felt like I was taking off in 2nd gear at stop signs, but my 1st gear ratio is worse than your 6 speed's.

3.83 vs 4.46 is a huge difference. I just took mine for a shake down run. 31/4.88/6spd and I can take of in 2nd about the same as when I had 3.73's.

I take off in second with 4.56/33/5spd combo unless I'm heavy or on a hill. First gear makes me shift too soon (IMO). You can easily idle out of gear in first though. I still wish I had 4.88 though. Occasionally I'll forget to shift into 5th when I get on the highway with the windows down or doors off. It seems perfectly happy at 65 in 4th.

So you wish you had 4.88 for those 33's?

I'm really strongly debating 5.13 for myself with the 4.0, 5-speed AX15 and 35's when the time comes. I'm happy with my 4.10 and 31's but I too feel it could be a little better on the highway if it were lower. I don't think 4.56 would be too crazy with my 31's. I wish I had a Jeep nearby so I could test before taking the plunge myself.

Our 4.0's typically get around really well with 4.88 on 35's with the 5-speed, but it would be nice to get the ability to compare between the two. I'm thinking I'm just gonna go for 5.13 and won't regear the front at first. If I really hate it, I'll drop back to 4.88 and regear the front to match, but I really think I'll like 5.13 enough to stick with it, at which point I'll regear the front to match whatever I end up with.

I often skip 1st. I'm in it for such a short time and 2nd takes off fine. I keep thinking that 33's would look so much better, and I can sell my 31's tomorrow for $400. So if I do and go to 33's I can try it out. If I like it I can go ahead and save to re-gear. If not I can easily switch back to 31's. Going all the way with a re-gear is almost a no turning back point...

I drove halfway to work this morning in 4th gear, after the roundabout I forgot to shift into 5th. So yeah, I think I could go 4.88 no problem with the 33" tires. And I'd be better off if I went to 35" tires.

Cool. I have to figure out whether I want 33's or 35's. I'm thinking I'll go 4.88 with 33's and if it is too revvy for me, then I'll finally put 35's on and call it good.

With 4.88 and 33's, it should be right at about 2900 at 70 and 3100 at 75. That's really not that crazy. The proper ratio for the 3-speed auto and 35's is 4.56 and that combo drives 75 at about 3300 rpm. I'm still well within the limits of that one, so I don't think 4.88 with 33's or 5.13 with 35's would be too much at all.

Guess I'll figure it out when I experiment with 33's and 4.88.

What axles do you have? To run 35" tires safely you'll want to do some axle upgrades be it Super 35 if applicable and chromoly shafts in the 30. Plus steering upgrades. 35" tires have significantly more leverage on everything.

I'll be going with a Super 35 in the rear and if I go with 35's, I'll be doing a Revolution Super 30 up front. I plan on Currie steering if it fits (it should) and I already have the Vanco Big Brake kit up front, in anticipation of running 35's.

The reason I'm debating 33's or 35's now is because Texas just made it mandatory to reinstall my 3rd brake light for inspections. In order to do that, I have to figure out a tire carrier option which leaves me with Bestop as one of the only options. I'm still here as a TJ enthusiast only and am currently driving the YJ so I have significantly less choices compared to the TJ. Unfortunately, that leaves the Exogate out. I like the Bestop carrier but I just don't know if I want to put 35's on it. I'm going to get it before I get either tire size, so I'll probably see how solid it feels and then finally will pick the tire size after that. I want 35's at the moment, but just don't know about that tire carrier with them. They say it's fine for 35's but based on the looks of it I don't know how much I trust it.

Hoping to get a TJ this summer finally. Then I'll have both Jeeps which to me, is the best of both worlds.

Can't you just add a third brake light of your own somewhere on your Jeep now?

I could, but I have a Smittybilt POS tire carrier that I have absolutely no plan to keep. Bestop is really one of the only better options out there for the YJs since OR-Fab went out of business. Only reason I have the Smitty is I was stuck between a rock and a hard place at the time of purchase. I needed the Jeep to tow something within a week but also needed to carry my tire. Was on a strict budget at the time so it fit the bill for the time being. I've hated it since day one, it's complete junk, and now it's finally time to do something about it since Texas is forcing my hand.

For shits and grins, I called 4 wheel parts to see what they charge. $1,950 and that doesn't include seals or speedo gear! I almost choked.

4 Wheel Parts suck. Don't waste your money over there.

I found out that hot rod shops can do gears for other vehicles too. And most are very reasonable priced.

X2, plus they always jack their first price quote up high in hopes you'll agree to the first price they give you. Not enough people know how to bargain for a lower prices so that devious trick often works for them.
