Rattle can or spray gun to color match half doors?

I think I will be using automotive touchup.com to color match my half doors, someone here pointed them out recently. I figure even if it is not perfect it will look better than mismatched doors I have now. I am trying to decide between their pre-mixed aerosol and pre-mixed ready to spray. I do have access to a paint both so dust contamination should not be a concern. I don't have a spray gun but see some pretty cheap at harbor freight etc. Even with the cost of buying the spray gun the cost difference is insignificant to me, I just want the best results. So, aerosol or paint gun?

Which ever way you go, you should final coat with a 2 part epoxy clear coat. You can get spray cans from Eastwood or online at Amazon.

I tried a few of those pre-mixed aerosols a few years back & didn't like them. I don't remember the company I ordered them from, but my biggest problem was that the nozzle was your standard push-button like any rattle can. It was a pain in the ass after so long of holding that button down to keep a steady layout, so I went back to my cheap HF gravity gun. Does this supplier have a trigger on their cans?

Edit: I was also spraying both sides of a hood & decklid, a smaller area like half doors might not be so bad with the button nozzle.

The spray nozzle on the aerosol cans appear to be nicer than the standard nozzle. I'm really trying to understand which might provide better results.

I used the aerosol cans from automotivetouchup.com on my half trail doors. It came out pretty good, but not perfect.
Silver is very forgiving though. The trick is to get a lot of clear over the base color coat.

I haven’t done it on a Jeep but I did it on my mustang that has a custom metallic paint.. I went to local auto paint supply store and they went out to car and matched the paint ... put it in aerosol cans and it was dang near perfect.. got clear and sealed and water sanded.. I was happy with results but wasn’t a side panel.. was spoilers and bumper skirts and such

On my old durango I did some bondo work and used a rattle can. It wasn't that good but it was my first time doing anything like that so not ba. I'm going to do the same on my jeep eventually and might get one of these that someone here recommended to make it easier. I used automotivetouchup.com and it was pretty good it just took forever to arrive, not sure if I will do the same this time or try duplicolor or something

So a (P)X8 color match should be done for any painting? Gloss black off the shelf won't match?

Thinking I'll shoot the windshield guards (steel) with self-etching primer, rattle can black and I guess clear, see how that goes before I decide the method for my aluminum half doors. Have used a ton of Napa (Senoir or such) Chassis Black over the years but never any clear coat.
I have an HVLP gun but have only used it for Eastwood Rust Encapsulator on the roof of my XJ, nothing that required a nice smooth & shiny surface.

I'm going to paint my half doors and bought a spray gun that hooks up to an air compressor. I've been told that the rattle can will not go on even enough.

Try telling a non-Jeeper that you want to spray paint your doors...

I recently did my new to me 1/2 doors, they were blue I painted them green.
Rattle cans...I have never been good with rattle cans, on a larger flat area. If its bracket, bolts, that kind of thing, I can get it done. I choose to use automotive paint, that I got from an automotive paint store, bought a gun from HF (their cheapest model). I did the prep work and every one will tell you, that is the hardest part, I did my best. Shot it with the correct color and then the clear. The doors turned out MUCH much better than if I used rattle cans, and I think they turned out pretty darn good. Not perfect but pretty good, I don think you can tell them from original doors walking by them.

IF you have not painted with a spray gun and used automotive paint, the place I bought my paint from were great, they told me everything I needed, printed out step by step instructions, with waiting times, and exactly how to mix the paint. They gave me straining funnels, measuring cups with the ratios printed on the side of the cup, sticks, everything I needed. Actually they did everything except hold the gun for me. After the prep, the spraying of the paint was pretty easy.

I'll check with the locals. Would be a good satisfying project if successful. Guessing I'll need to replace the filters in my compressor lines. Of course, my LJR is black so any errors will likely POP..

@DuncLJ inspired me to do my half doors last year. I used rattle cans from automotive touch up and had pretty good success.

I use an inexpensive HVLP spray gun from Princess Auto (Canada's Harbor Freight). I shot single stage enamel for my LJ. It's an off the shelf colour straight from Canadian Tire, Home Depot, Walmart, etc. I figure this Jeep is going to need touching up from time to time so I wanted to keep it simple.
