Help With Keys And Lock Cylinders

Here is my current key & lock situation which is a mess, but I believe the Jeep was repossessed at one point in its history.

I have one working aftermarket ignition key with SKIS/SKIM.

I have a second aftermarket key cut for the ignition cylinder but it is not programmed to the car or is not a sentry key.

I have full doors from a 2000 Jeep Wrangler and no keys that I purchased from a junk yard since apparently the factory doors weren’t on the Jeep when it was repo’d years ago.

I have a tailgate from a 2006 Jeep Wrangler and a single aftermarket all metal key that I bought since the one one the Jeep had the lock cylinder ripped out and damaged the sheet metal. The lock face measures 1.25”.

Ideally I would like to be able to have the ignition key unlock both doors and the tailgate; however, would also be okay with a second key that worked on both doors and the tailgate.

I’m hoping to get 1 key to work in the ignition, doors, and tailgate or at least 1 for the ignition and another for the doors and tailgate.

I have the following questions

1. My 1999 TJ had a single key the ignition and all doors. Was this the same in 2004, or was the ignition key separate from the sentry key for the ignition?
2. Can I re-key the 2000 door lock cylinders to work with a 2004 key?
3. Can I put 2004 door lock cylinders in a 2000 door, or are they bigger in diameter?
4. Did the number of tumblers in the lock cylinder change between 2000 and 2004 such that it’s not possible to use a single key for both?

I'm not 100% positive on this, but I think they came from the factory with 1 key that fit the ignition, glove box, center console, tailgate and which ever types of doors it came with (full or half). I know my '06 has only 1 key for all those items. Mine came with full doors from the factory.

I would think you can rekey the 2000 to work with the '04.

From my understanding, the full doors are all the same size cylinders. My half doors have smaller cylinders than my full doors. My half doors came off of a '97 but I'm not sure if ALL half doors have smaller cylinders.

I don't know about the number of tumblers.

I rekeyed them.

The full door cylinders are also different sizes. I put full doors on my 03 and I had to rekey the cylinders on my new doors from a 97 because the cylinders are smaller. But the cylinders can be rekeyed to work with any years to my knowledge

Great, so it sounds like there are different size lock cylinders and they may need to be matched to the style of door or year, but that all keys in use from 97-06 can be made to work with all lock cylinders in use from 97-06.

I re-keyed the full door lock cylinder from 2000 to work with the ignition key for a 2004 using information from another thread on the forum and the tumbler kit from ebay. It was surprising simple.
