Are Ron Davis Racing Radiators worth the money?

I find it more than a bit sad that someone trying to act smart doesn't know the difference between rows and cores. There is no such thing as a 4 core radiator. When a radiator is built, 1 or more rows of tubes are stuck together with fins between them are attached to the tank header and sans tanks, that is the core. When the tanks and mounting system with hose connections are added to the core, that makes it a radiator.

Radiator design efficiency is compromised by adding extra rows of tubes due to the spaces between the rows diminishing fin to tube contact. Your radiator design would be greatly improved if they converted it to a 2 row with wider tubes. That would get rid of 2 spaces between rows and convert that to higher efficiency all other things being equal.

The Mopar offering has never been the best. It has however, cooled correctly and efficiently under all conditions in a properly maintained system at what used to be a tolerable price point with an acceptable lifespan of roughly 100,000 miles and about 20 years of use. It worked, it was reliable, and it wasn't terribly priced. It has only been difficult to get for about 2 years and the current version started about 24 years ago which means it was a stellar product for about 22 years.

I'll bet a pretty penny that your cheap supplier hasn't even been selling in the US for 22 years. For the record, the Wizard Cooling radiator did exactly all of the things it needed to, the durability was just not there.

I disagree in low speed situations which is where a “4 core” with 4 tubes cools better. In my industry there are no 2 tube radiators. Cores are way thicker with way more tubes due to low road speed conditions. They rely on fans only for cooling not road speed. Similar to off road. My temps maintain the same as a stock replacement on the road and works better off road. What’s the difference between a cheap junk, probably Chinese built, stock replacement and a cheap junk aluminum radiator? Most rigs built are running cheap aluminum radiators from one of the big speed shops. Very few failures as long as they’re mounted correctly. I added a staggered 5 tube core to my fj40 with a stock gm 6.0 with factory clutch fan and the cooling improved dramatically over the stock 3 tube. How’s that work? I pulled the tanks on the stock one, and rodded the tubes to ensure they were clean. Still couldn’t maintain trail temps. The 5 tube core has been working perfectly since 2016. Seems like everyone here takes your words as gospel and repeats it with no actual experience in the subject. Typical jeepers who all bolt the same junk onto there jeeps because the internet told them to.

How would it be better than stock Mopar if the stock radiator keeps a TJ at the temp it's designed to run? How many people with a TJ have a Ron Davis radiator still going strong after 23 years?

No one says OEM Mopar radiator is the best, so you can stop with that misrepresentation.

What the advocates of the OEM Mopar radiator want out of an aftermarket radiator is one that has the cooling capacity of OEM and also has a documented record of surviving 100k miles similar to OEM Mopar. Frame your response around that set of criteria.

You aren't making your case any better. If you have 10 cents in your pocket, maybe you can purchase a paragraph break or three so it makes that drivel easier to read. When you learn the difference between rows, tubes, core, and fins, let's chat.

Blaine is a forum sponsor.
I read this post and went to the sponsors tab in the drop down menu and didn’t see a company that looked like his…

Does he make radiators? I’m currently searching for something other than the cheap parts store ones.

TIA

It’s funny how everyone takes his work as gospel on every subject, like radiators, yet he sold me a product didn’t fit as advertised, and the sheep still chime in defending him….

Where radiators are concerned, all Blaine has ever done is lay out a set of criteria for a desirable radiator. This criteria is independent of brand name. He did that in this thread. Do you disagree with the criteria?

OEM radiators are gone and i’m not dealing with big name aftermarket because let’s be real it sucks. no matter who it’s made by it sucks. but i’ve heard really good things about Ron Davis Racing but a rad is $1200. for that price it better stop a bullet. can anyone validate this insane price???

I don’t see they have a catalog listing for a TJ.

I do, it his opinion though, it doesn’t work for what I need a radiator to do. Same as my opinion and needs in a radiator aren’t needed for the mall crawlers. A stock style would be better for the street at road speeds.

Read above. Cooling at low speeds with the ac on is more important for my needs. Moon dust isn’t fun to breathe all day. My setup worked perfectly for 3 days at 1-3 mph in 80-90’ weather and the drive home. On the last trip, the new Oem replacement wasn’t happy with the ac on.

Again, there is more to that story than you are letting on. An entirely factory cooling system is more the capable of doing what you are asking. Mine certainly does.

FYI. Ron Davis radiators and oil coolers are top notch. They’ll make anything you want. Little spendy and overkill for a TJ. Not sure if a factory TJ radiator will keep up with their tranny cooler-heat exchanger… Can we discuss electric fans now? I have some theories...

Mr. Blain: do you have a radiator you recommend? I have another thread going about my overheating problems:
