First Jeep welding project. I’m not a good welder bc I don’t practice enough. 😹

Currie Mini Skids. I had to fix both of the stock mounts because they were bent and mangled. All good now. I also added some BMB JJ washers to center the front CA’s in the mount. Took quite a bit of time because the mounts needed work. My welds sucked, but they’re strong and I cleaned them up. The important thing is smooth so nothing catches.

For those of us not proud to show off our welds, that why grinders and paint are made! ;)

It seems like you went a bit light in the welds. There's not much of a bead between the tube and skid and the skid to CA mount has a pretty visible seam.

That's not meant as discouragement, just an observation that it's a bit timid on the penetration.

That’s stuff I need to know. I gotta go now but I’ll be back later with question about how to weld the gap there?

Nice Job. I just got a set of these. I haven’t had time to weld them on. And, as per normal with Savvy, no instructions. I was going to look around the forum for pics or ask @Jerry Bransford or @mrblaine which way the went on. My original assumption was exactly how you have them. That would be stronger.

But then I held them up in the reverse direction. They hang down less and have lower angle and a smoother departure.

So which is it?

They're Currie parts, or rather Rock Jock.

And looking at this Jeremy, maybe I'm wrong on your welds. I probably boogered mine on too much! I'd just expect the sharp corners and gap to be mostly non existent here.

You want the one that lets you weld on three sides.

I got them from Savvy but yes they are Currie per the listing on the Savvy site. Did you need to put down multiple weld beads to fill the gap between the skid and the axle tube?

I did a root pass and a fill pass, but I was newer to welding then so they just look like boogers anyway.

That helps. I should have done a root pass. I’ve heard that term but did not make another pass.

Like your first and second pic, where you can weld on all three sides. I wish the 1 axle side was designed where it was closer to the axle. Your second pic looks right for placement.

Smack the skid on enough rocks and they will be closer to the axle. You'll be glad there was a larger gap to start with.

The shape is part of the design. As the skid deforms upward, it tries to spread the mount apart. This creates more structure than if it were a flat plate. This is a little understood reason why the Savvy skid is shaped the way it is.

If it was, folks would bitch when they had to grind it down to fit.

No, you just tap the tongue in until it touches the tube and weld it up.
Duh on my part. 🙄 Sounds like nobody knows to tap that edge in though.

BTW- if you were to put them on like the last pic shows, the body of the joint would hit under articulation. ;) That's the main reason they are formed like that.

I went back into the mini skids today. The one on the passenger side was separated enough I could clean it up, tap the top of the skid in and weld it up, so it's much better and I'm satisfied that the install is sufficient to accomplish the purpose of these skids; to strengthen the lower CA mount and to give a smooth sliding surface.
