Daily Driver Brake Recommendations

Another thing that chapped my hide recently related to brakes was our swap to Progressive auto insurance. They offered to send us little boxes you plug into your OBD2 reader to monitor driving in order to get a lower rate. I thought, ”save every penny, right?” We’re all good drivers (5 drivers in household). Well, it turns out if you brake hard it interprets that as a dangerous event. Hence, you’re a dangerous driver. The little box beeps at you every time you do that. Then it reflects on your score and they adjust your premium. Of course, I don’t want to ride my brakes and slow down really gradually to avoid the beep and mess up my BMB pads.

In the end I decided not to waste my time trying to call them to explain the importance of firm braking for safety and just settled for getting the lowest score in the household. 🙄 I’ll be leaving Progressive when I shop insurance again next year.

I've never heard anything good about progressive.

I've had devices that were similar in company vehicles, they'd track company wide and if you hit a perfect (or near perfect score) with no alerts and based the amount of mileage you drove, you'd get a small monetary reward. It would monitor harsh braking events, speed, idle time, cornering, and a handful of other metrics. It would also send an alert to the fleet manager if it was unplugged. It was such a pain, I'd drive thru a field on a project and would get dinged for hitting prairie dog holes or a minor spin out in dirt because it was a "harsh event".

Now, I use my Torque app and obii dongle similarly, but I just like to watch and measure all these things. Its certainly helped with mileage because I can monitor my throttle input. But my insurance company doesnt need to know that

Now for the “Bad news”.
All your iphones and Android phones are 24/7 365 spying and when connected to your Apple Carplay and Android Auto (even with GPS disabled on tbe phone), are taking ALL driving habit info derived , and the #1 purchasers of rhis metadata is……INSURANCE COMPANIES

Dont use these wireless spying sold under the facade of convenience. Even if you connect to an OEM bluetooth, with Telematics….that too is spying and selling your driving habits

As long as Battery is not physically removed, you never know what your phone is doing, and it is safe to assume that it gathers data.
I have a tip for you - if you don't want anybody to know your driving habits, or gather data about you 24/7, or prevent from some evil government tracking you, then have a small metal box inside a car. When you don't want anybody to know where you are headed, or how you drive, just put the phone there. Any metal box, like a standard military ammo box for 5.56mm, will do the job. The metal creates something called "Faraday Cage", which isolates any electromagnetic signals in and out. This means that your phone will not receive GPS signal to track your location, nor it will receive the signal from the cellular base stations (with triangulation, even w/o GPS, based on base stations only, the phone can track location with up to 100 feet precision). It also cannot send any signals out, which means that it cannot tell to base stations about his presence. This is also jams Bluetooth and wifi, so you are all set.
If you don't have a box, you can simply wrap your phone with aluminum foil, like the one that you have in the kitchen. It works exactly as metal box.
The only component that cannot be completely eliminated, is the build in accelerometer inside the phone, with can track acceleration, but it's precision inside modern iPhone or Androids is too low for any efficient tracking of your location.
 
@mrblaine Most of the workplaces that are protected by quality firewall, will prevent the user from visiting a site that requires specific exception to security policy.

As for overheat in faraday cage, it should not happen with any decent phone. I would never expect anything like to happen to iPhone for example.
The way it works with cellular communication (3G, 4G and 5G), is that it will never attempt to transmit anything, if it does not see the the synchronization channel signals. Faraday cage blocks them, so phone loses the lock. No lock, to transmission. No transmission, means almost no heat emitted.

Works on my phone but my work PC does not like it. I do work for a large company that has internet restrictions so it might be just me
