Hello all. Appreciate in help and or insight into my gear setup.
Here is the info:
  • 2006 Jeep TJ Unlimited Rubicon
  • Has 110,000 miles
  • Previous owner had the axles regeared to 4.88's
  • Pinion bearing burnt up.
  • Decided to upgrade to 35 spline chromoly axle shafts which required a new carrier, so went with a 35 spline ARB locker
  • Nitro 4.88 gears.
Here are my questions.
  • Curious about your thoughts on my current pattern. Backlash is currently @ 11,000", so need to tighten that up a bit.
  • How are you guys running your airline for the arb in these Rubicon axles? I have searched extensively, and I swore I saw people recommending the rear plunger port for the original locker. At first I had thought this was the way to go, but after having played with it a bit, it seems like it may be to far back to make the connections. There is another option witch would be to run it to the more forward facing original air line location. Thoughts on this?

Pattern looks pretty good, but I'll defer to the experts like @hosejockey61 . Whats nitro say for backlash?

As for airline, the stock location on mine has been sealed for years and years. The arb one has been drilled on a flat spot not far behind the cover

Your pattern is slightly deep. Remove 5 thou. Be sure to have backlash in spec. When determining your pinion preload, shoot for 16-20 in/lbs. If you take it to the OEM spec of 20-40 you'll burn it up again if it's on the higher side

Thanks for the input guys, truly appreciate it. Hosejockey61, your videos were a big help for me as well.

I moved some things around and got my backlash in order. After checking in four different spots, the average comes out to .007 which is in spec. here is the current pattern. Thoughts?

Thanks,
Shawn

I'd say the coast side looks good but the more important drive side is deep.

So what did you change as far as pinion depth?

35 spline is not recommended for the Dana 44. ARB has a 33 spline. The 33 spline is a little thinner in diameter and gives a little which saves the other smaller or weaker parts in the axle. 35 spline in a Dana 60 is a great idea.

Thanks again all who chimed in. My apologies for not responding sooner. Just after my last post, my base for my dial indicator exploded, then got sick, holiday and family brings us to today.

I have gone back through everything and made some adjustments. The setup I inherited from the previous owners regear had a .055 shim between the pinion head and the bearing. the only shims for the carrier were the stock thick shims from the factory.

As per Hosejockey61 recommendation, I removed .005 from the stock pinion shim. I also adjusted my backlash to .005 which is in Nitro gears spec's.

Here is the current pattern, thoughts and suggestions?

Thanks,
Shawn

There is no way that is a 5 thou change from the previous pattern. This one is really shallow now.

Start going the other direction...
