OPDA concerns

I just got a 2004 4.0 and now I am reading about the OPDA issues. Wish I knew this before I got it. Anyway, I read on this fourm it was only 2005-2006 and another place 2004-2006. Not sure what to expect. Do I need to replace it? Already spent a lot on the RMS, new clutch and O2 sensors.

I thought this was supposed to be a good engine.

It's an overblown issue, trust me. Remember, all you read on the internet is negative things.

Don't lose sleep over it unless yours is making noise. If it makes you feel better, pull your OPDA and inspect it. It's easy to do and shouldn't take much time at all.

2004s don't have the issue that I'm aware of, but you should still check just given how easy it is to check.

Again, DO NOT lose sleep over this. It's an issue that has been greatly blown out of proportion just like the whole LS7 valve issue with Chevys.

Thanks Chris, that makes me feel better. I was sweating replacing the coolant system and now this. I'll mark it off my list.

So many of the "issues" with ANY vehicle are way over hyped. There are very few issues on the TJ, or most any vehicle that are as rampant as people would have you believe. It's the old Squeaky Wheel Gets The Oil thing. Yes, there may be a problem, but it is likely far less common than reported. A real problem is the seat brackets wear and will wiggle a little bit. But this won't make the headlines, so it remains what it really is...a non-issue.

Just monitor the sounds coming from your vehicle.

If you hear a group of chuckling primates in a resovior... I mean "Barrel of laughing monkies"... then take a look at the OPDA.


I have pics of my worn out OPDA on here somewhere if your interested. I had the squealing sound for 2 years until i replaced it.
