Picking up where I left off

<snip>.......It will be interesting to see if the difference is noticeable from swapping it out for the SwayLOC soon.

You will notice a huge difference with the swayloc. I know this one for sure because because it’s one of the few things that’s easy to test back and fourth.

Wait until the Swayloc and you'll realize how much roll there still is.
I guess I had been ignoring the body roll all these years and perhaps just dismissed it as “normal”. I don’t think I could ever recommend a Rancho RS5000X or similar after this. It’s amazing how much the body roll has an effect on even simple things, not necessarily just flying through corners.

Very much looking forward to it! All this thing needs is more power and it would be 100% perfect.

It makes shock discussions difficult now, even though they should be really easy.

It does

Of course it’s a hard pill for someone to swallow spending close to $1700 on shocks, $400 on towers, tuning, and either the labor of paying someone to do the outboard or doing it themselves.

I think you’ll lose most people once you start dropping actual numbers. I suspect most people simply don’t care enough to spend that much.

The thing is you don’t have to, even the fox shocks in the factory locations are decent enough to have shown me how bad the Ranchos really are, and you don’t have to buy new. Hopefully I have my SwayLoc before TJFest to see how nice it is through the curvy drive over.

The money and/or the ability is part of it. And that is all fair and justified. Then there are those who can do all that, but can't get the setup right and don't know any better. Or can't believe there is a better.

Right!?! Until Blaine touched my Jeep I never thought I would want more power.

Yep, and he and I have had this discussion many times.

The ideal setup might be an aluminum block I6 or V6 with around 300 HP or so and a better transmission mated to it. In fact, if the Pentastar could fit, it would probably be perfect. He mentioned trying to fit one in a TJ though and it wouldn't work, so no such luck.

I remain hopeful that a stroker may give me the power I am missing, but it's still not going to change the fact that this transmission is retarded. I keep hoping Blaine might someday figure out another automatic transmission that could work in place of the 42RLE and actually function the way a modern transmission is supposed to.

Are you talking about Fox IFP shocks? If so, have you tuned them at all? I know you can tune them, just that the tuning you can do to them is limited.

And then there are those who keep wanting to go in circles and discuss spring rates and how they equate to handling as far as TJs are concerned ;)

Now, if you care to put yourself through the wringer, you too can explain how dramatically you can change the ride using just the adjusters. ;)

Swapping the engine breaks the build rules of mine. But a built stroker motor will likely be in my jeeps future for a little more power once this motor gets a little tired out. That is if Blaine comes up with a way of doing it he recommends.

Yep, I'm with you.

I'm waiting until Russ Poettinger finishes the stoker build for Blaine. It sounds like that's still a long ways out, but if Blaine ends up having positive feedback on that, I'll go the stroker route and just be happy with 100 extra HP (which is really all I need).

I've been through the supercharger thing enough times to know that there really isn't a good supercharger kit out there for the TJ. The Banks turbo kit seems like a decent option, but they don't make them anymore, and I'm not sure I want to fuck with forced in induction anyways.

Supposedly they’re tuned, they were originally from savvy. I never looked more into them since they’re good enough for until I get my 12” ones in someday.

Yes, same ones I had. I spoke with Blaine about this and he said Savvy can order them tuned from Fox. While I'm not sure the specifics of the tune, I can say that having had the same shocks on my before, they weren't terrible. In fact, I like them better than the Ranchos I had on my last TJ.

I don't think I'll recommend Ranchos anymore unless people are really on a budget, in which case it's a better shock than the alternatives.

You guys are calling me out so bad right now. I have all the outboards and etc but I'm in this boat, terrifying at 65 everything feels loose

..... Like a W5A580 with paddle shifters 🥰

I'm onboard with you, stroker interests me. I want to love driving my jeep on the road but I don't want to do a v8.

I agree

Having owned a JK Rubicon, I can tell you that 285 HP (which is what the 3.6 Pentastar) has, felt absolutely fantastic with 315 tires. It had no issue whatsoever with a lack of power, passing power, etc. The Pentastar engine is a fantastic engine with just the right amount of power for a Wrangler. It's just too bad that something like that doesn't easily fit into a TJ.

Now an inline 6 with an aluminum head, aluminum block, overhead cam, etc. That right there would be the golden ticket.

The ability to control compression on the shocks you have is very similar to an adjustable swaybar but easier to click. Spend the time to learn the characteristics of them on your rig. They work well.

I assume they have a flutter stack with one or more of the reeds that have a pressure relief for the high speed or fast movement. Low speed, you will feel the difference in most every click.

I put a dymo poly tape sticker on all four of mine that say "CCW is softer" This is for the crew that attends my needs. When I say 2 clicks stiffer, it takes them twice as long to do the math though.
