No.
There's a night and day sound quality improvement by upgrading to something like those Polk DB speakers. The component in a stereo system that has the greatest effect on sound quality is the speaker.
A sub is not required to see the benefit of upgrading the four main speakers. I upgraded to just the Polk DB speakers in my previous TJ with an aux amplifier and the improvement in sound quality was startling. My previous TJ did not have a subwoofer. Adding a subwoofer is a nice thing to do, I have one now, but to say it's required isn't really true... unless you're into playing your music loud enough to irritate those in cars surrounding you.
Polk DB stuff in mine as well.
These dash speaker pods also made a noticeable improvement.

6.5" fits in the soundbar used in 2002 and older TJs without modification. I'm not sure about the sound pods introduced in in 2003.
.
03+ doesn't fit without modification. Not worth it IMO.

Not for a 5.25", that I recall.I assume the stock ones can't be modified to work? Added to my order.
I posted pics of the 6.5" prior to your posts. Here they are...very easy to do, less than 45 mins. I also used some pieces of weatherstrip to keep the rings light covers from rattling.
@bobthetj03 - the 6.5"s fit nicely with just relocating screw holes. By relocating screw holes it is literally screwing a screw into plastic. The sound is fantastic, and I relocated my 5.25" Helix speakers to the front to drop in the 6.5" Polks.

I was looking through my order history, a few years ago I had replaced the blown sub for one of these: Kicker 40CWRT671 am I still good with that or should I replace it?
I have relays hidden under my console. I might be able to fit a very small amp under the cup holder area?
Everyone is talking about speakers, what about head units that are blue tooth, backup camera, etc? Tim
Not to be a dbag but you should start your own thread about what you are looking for in a head unit, like bluetooth, back up camera, CDplayer, spotify, HD radio or standard radio, android auto or applecar play etc. What do you want out of the head unit?
In the product code, 40CWRT671, the last digit mean the ohms, so 1 ohm. The factory speaker is 2 ohm so you would want the 40CWRT672.
That model is old so if you can find one scoop it up, but this is the new model.

If you add an amplifier make sure the ohms match up. If you do add an amp, I highly recommend looking for a 5 channel amp to power your entire system.
What's the downside to the 1 ohm unit? It seems to work fine.
I think I finally found a unit that I like! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_500ILXW650/Alpine-iLX-W650.html
I can pair it with an amp too so I'll use it with my Polk 522. What should I get for a sub? I need some nice clean wub wubs.
