The big detail for me, having seen a bunch of these, is that his message could be written to anyone. There is no mention of Jeeps, brakes, racing, off road. There is no hint that Dave is actually familiar with you or what you have to offer.

If you've run across any of my CL ads, I ask that any response specifically mention the thing in the ad. I even state in the ad that this is my spam filter. That comes from these scam emails.

bottom line is more info on his end could let you find out if your getting fished or passing on what could be a sale.

Very good point, that’s something I look for as well, a more personalized message as oppose to something that seems like a generic / canned message.
Of course maybe there is more to the initial message we aren’t seeing.

That is the full initial message. I replied with the question of what items in particular he was interested in and he came back with a quantity of 5 BBK with unit bearings with this below that.
I have a private shipping company that will be coming directly to your location for the pick up, they are called Total Transport Service. I will be providing their contact details so you can email them the weight and dimension for this consignment and they can quote us the shipping cost to Bermuda.
Then you can add everything up together in my final proforma invoice so i can send you my credit card details for you to charge the total cost from it and get the shipping fees settled, then my order can be shipped out asap.

That reply is certainly as literate and well constructed as the vast majority of emails I get from customers and in fact is better than most. The red flags are only about half mast at best.

It is identical in most aspects to all of the inquiries we get to ship a kit overseas. They all start the same way, I tell them we don't do that and only ship to freight forwarders.
