PRNDL's Green Jeep

Had the jeep out at BMRA this past Saturday. Fairly decent turnout, not crowded though. BMRA is about a 3 hour drive from the house. With no soccer and no softball on a Saturday, I had my son and younger daughter with me for this trip. We got an early start and were at the gate at 8am. The park is a 1,850 acre "mountain" of red clay in east Texas, owned and maintained by TMTC. The main pavilion is at the top and trails run down and around. It is very dusty. After making the 200 yard drive from the gate to the pavilion, my daughter couldn't help herself:

Most of what I ran is ravines and washouts with some off camber stuff. There's harder stuff, sure, but this is what a lot of the property looks like. Ravines for days:

Ran in an easy group with @MattTJRubicon82 in the morning.

After lunch, Matt and his buddies let me and my little 33s tag along on a trail called Whatever. It's a ravine with a tricky section straddling a v. The ruts are deep and you can teeter a bit. Matt went first and tipped a bit nose up, I think. In the video, right at the start, I don't get far enough over passenger and nose down into the notch. Not deep enough to flop, but got the blood pumping a bit. A better line hugging the driver side wall coming out of it.

We split up and I spent the rest of the day running easy trails with my two kiddos. They really had a good time. It was nice having a photographer with me.

There was one decent climb. An XJ with open diffs was getting winched up when we got there. Fairly easy line for the Rubi. Daughter for scale.

The day ended with a run through the articulation chute. Used all available shock travel and bumps set correctly to prevent rubbing.

We stopped at Dairy Palace in Canton on the way home for a burger. It was a great day with my kids. Jeeps are pretty neat.

It's been a while. Work and the kid's activities have kept me occupied. The spring has been wet, but that has kept temperatures mild and I've been able to enjoy the jeep topless for a good long stretch.

There have been a few updates.
I added cruise control with a factory module from eBay. The harness was already wired for it. I enjoy it a lot.

Battery failed last November. I replaced it with a SuperStart Marine AGM from O'Reilly. Nothing exciting, its a battery and its been trouble free since.

I replaced the hood footman loop with a Crown 55176422K part. One of the threaded ends had broken off of mine. It has been broken since before I had the Jeep, but never moved unless I was washing it. Something small checked off.

I've been running a cheap $25 sub for the last two years. Finally pushed it too hard. Replaced it today with the Kicker 48CWRT674 4 ohm. I wired it in parallel for a total of 2 ohms. The Soundstream amp’s sub channel is rated at 350 watts at 2 ohms. Still running the factory box in the center console. I added some clearance with a heat gun and a yeti tumbler for the larger kicker. Sounds great, much more punch than the Goldwood.

Running the soft top on the highway had been miserably loud. I have been blaming the MasterTop that came from the PO. After some more reading, its possible the worn out tension straps might be the cause of at least some of it allowing slack in the wrong places. I ordered replacement material from Strapworks and found a template on an old Jeep Forum post. I cut and installed them today with #8 - 1/2" stainless screws and washers. Much more tension when putting the top up. I'll give it a few days to settle and see what the noise level is like with the whole top on. Either way, the straps were busted for the 3rd time and needed to be replaced.

Overall, the Jeep is running well. There is some looseness in the steering that wasn't there a year ago. That is on the list to check in to this weekend. I've been putting off greasing johnny joints too - that needs to happen this weekend too. Engine temps on the highway were hitting 220 last weekend. I just did most of the cooling system late last year. Something to keep an eye on this summer.

Been running my strapworks for almost a year, which is twice as long as the cheap Amazon replacements beforehand.

Thanks, great to know. Several of your posts came up in my research. The strap material is great.

My concern is the template might have been a bit on the short side. There wasn't a complete strap left of my originals to create a template. If the straps are too short, I can see it creating more tension than is needed on the back corners of the soft top and allowing the section of top between the two bars to flap more easily. I won't really know if there's any change in noise until I put the whole top and doors back on which I'm not in a hurry to do. Either way, its relatively simple to try other lengths.

Got the lower control arm johnny joints greased over the last weekend. The uppers and track bar will have to wait.

Fixed a leak/squeak in the sub enclosure. The Kicker sub is a massive improvement. Kids are enjoying it.

Trying to plan a low key trip to Bridgeport this summer with a JLU buddy. My son has been asking to take a Jeep trip soon

Last minute decided to take my son on a solo run up to Bridgeport this afternoon. Tons of fun, he seems to really enjoy it.

Left the doors at home this time. Earplugs on the highway made all the difference. The park was mostly dry - a few sloppy mud ruts along the trails. Not very much traffic in the afternoon. It was very, very hot.

Jeep did great. Didn't do anything crazy since we were on our own. I got stuck once going up a rocky optional trail. I got off my line and behind an undercut boulder with my passenger rear tire. I was able to get back over and muscle it up. I think a couple of my wheels are going to be witnesses to that event. Smacked something pretty hard once but find what hit. I assume I'll find it while cleaning. The ride home was smoother than the ride out there. It was a great afternoon capped off with a stop at Buc-ee's for dinner.

Not many pictures - we only stopped to get out a few times to check lines. Here's most of them.

Doorless with the top on was a great combo of airflow and shade. In that heat, I'm not sure there was a better choice. My son loves any and all Jeep time. The girls and wife are fine with top and doors off - if they have appropriate hair restraints.

Its up there in the rare color category with your aztec gold and impact orange. There were some other rare-ish colors in 97 too i think. It wasn't at all something I was looking for but I love it.

If I ever have a weekend that doesn't involve a softball tournament, we should meet up out there.

I'd be down. I'm in the same softball boat with my 12 year old. Season ended just in time for the inferno to kick in.

we still have 3 on the books, although one is a midnight tournament. Yesterday we had to play 5 back to back, and would've had 2 more if we had kept winning. It was pretty rough out there. And this stupid park out in GP literally had zero shade, but had stands that were positioned such that you couldn't really get your tent in a good position. I'm going to buy some land and build an intelligent set of fields & stands, and everyone will clamor to play in my tournaments.

She finished the season at the Jennie Finch World Series in Sulphur, LA. We drove six hours to play the minimum 4 games. Brutal weekend. My girl did her part. Batted 1.000 and played well at short. The good news is we finished early enough on Friday to make it home that night. No way I was spending the weekend there.

There are some real crap holes around the metroplex to play softball in. Sign me up for the grounds crew when you build your park.

Y’all need to have your kids come play down in ATL. We skipped the tournament team this year, but we have shade, concessions, and deep beer coolers.

Got the caked on mud off the wheels. Could be worse. I thought this first one was going to be ugly. At the time, it looked like it shaved a sliver off the bead. Looks like it didn't get through the primer?

Not sure if this was done on the trip or not. This is the wheel that was caught in the undercut. Passenger Rear

@NashvilleTJ picked up a new steering wheel from the dude in Poland and sent me his old wheel.

My wheel has a slight but noticeable cant on the top side toward the hood - it's been that way since I bought the Jeep. Visible here.

More visible when you put it back to back with Jeff's.

Borrowed a puller and it was quick swap. The leather feels nice and it's a definite upgrade over the molded, bent wheel. Thanks Jeff!
