Re-gear now, lockers later

Sometimes I wonder how drastic it could really feel to go 1, 2 gear steps when I see people debating it. I know for me it will be a huge difference. But sounds like it was very noticeable to you too.

The difference in one step is enough for me that I was intending to go from 488 to 513 back when the Jeep was a manual.

Yeah I think it'll be nice. While it might not be a huge difference in rocks it will probably be much nicer in a lot of other terrain.

You can modulate your brake & or parking brake to help it when one tire is in the air, Once you have it you'll just have to play with it and figure out what works for you.

Yeah not sure why it makes me so nervous. Maybe I just need more experience with it like you say, but I'm not very motivated to go get it lol.

Since you have other rigs to drive it isn't necessary.

Is it? I've never looked into that, I saw quaife makes an LSD for my transaxle. It is a similar process to set those up?

Yes, Your transaxle has a differential in it just like the Jeep.

That's how I do most things. But I keep seeing patience and organization is important for this... And both of those run extremely thin when I'm losing shit in the rocks 😂 a stand is a good idea, I'm going to set up a table and stuff so I can keep my shit together for this one.

Hosejokey did it by using a old weight bench. You add the pinion support to it and it really is a good idea. So just start watching marketplace and local free sites for someone getting rid of an old weight bench.

That's pretty cool. It's cool when there are like small business gear manufacturing type places. Always the kind of thing I thought you'd only see from huge companies

I like supporting the little guy when I can.

I think so too. I think it'll give me a lot more confidence and let me take my mind off the clutch more. It will also let me work on other things since this has more or less held my build up

I had older Jeeps that came stock with 5.38 gears so I was spoiled... And then I had low gears in my Samurai so when I got my Tj I was like this has got to change. The stock 4.10's & 33" tires with the 4 cyl wasn't fun. When I regeared the lowest you could get were 4.88 at the time. I could use 5th again after that until I went to 35's.

Maybe I'll finally understand the debates about the 1 step. Although I'll be going 5 so... maybe I still won't.

True. Way nicer in a long wheelbase truck.

I mean I knew that... but I guess I kinda thought it'd be a different animal than a solid axle. Thats pretty cool.

Ha! I am watching a video of his right now and I was thinking that his rack looked like a little bench press rack. That is a good idea if I can find one. I was thinking just using some 2x4s and 4x4s and a jack stand for the pinion so I can adjust it.

Totally.

Yeah I think there is a lot of "I don't know what I'm missing" going on. I feel that about 5th. Been driving a 4spd manual for years. Which sometimes means cruising at 3500-3800RPM, also not very fun haha.

Since you are keeping the front lunch box you really should try to get the rear locker in for Moab. Sell plasma, sperm, onlyfans, belly dancing gigs whatever works for you.

He's not getting a locker for the Dana 35 "yet"... It's a traction aid...limited slip not locker...

I actually donated plasma in college. Those needles are horrifying.

Yeah I don't reallyyy think I could make it happen by then. It'll be close doing what I'm already trying to do.

I wouldn't let you convince me to try Pritchett on 33s anyways...

Find a used ARB

The hard part is I either buy a 27 spline locker now and then need another locker later, or I buy a 30 spline locker and a super 35 kit

Be resourceful, you have a battery powered sawzall? Hacksaw?

Neighbors with catalytic converters?

A TruTrac is better than a open diff and if he's in there already and has it then I'd do it...

If he's got the TruTrac already I'd do it for now until he's ready to do the Super35.

I’m advocating doing it once all the way if he can figure out a way to make it happen.

💸💸💸

I was planning on doing it all later this year during bonus time but that is late summer. I was thinking this way I can have something new to do in Moab this year.

I am wondering if it is a bad idea to regear and then add in selectable lockers / 30 spline axle shafts down the line later. I understand that will require setting backlash
Adding a locker later is an easy job. Measure backlash before it comes apart, fiddle with spacers to get same backlash with new carrier.

I wouldn't call it setting up gears.

App's right though. Go be a gigolo and hustle up some cash.heck you might even find a sugar momma to buy you jeep parts and solve your single problem too😉

Yep. I am like, the high end of medium intensity, at best. Even if I wanted to go tons and 40s eventually this will be good to learn now.

The more you do, the more your perspective will change 😉

Haha yeah... I have a feeling not being severely undergeared may make me willing to try alot more than I would have before, too. I still remember being blown away with my jeep when I got it and now I am a bit underwhelmed.

I think you may have missed JJ’s point, Trev. He means the more you learn, the more you realize tons and 40’s are not needed.

I believe JJ was dropped on his head as a child…

🙂
