Re-gear now, lockers later

You’d be fine with just the locker. All the gears are going to do is change your crawl ratio from 40:1 to 53:1. That is not very significant.

At 83:1 I still needed to slow down at times. So I said screw it and put in an auto.

I will say, you guys are really testing my relatively recent full-committal to my budget

The money really just isn't there. I will probably have around 1500$ max to spend on this before Moab. And technically part of that needs to be going towards my lodging and such for Moab.

Locker is 1300, a press is 200+, maybe it would be doable but it would be close. Id still need dial indicators and etc too

Gears are only 600$. Press and tools maybe 4-500$. So I can do it without comprising on my goals. Maybe get a summit seat cushion so my back isn't ruined this year.

Plus I gotta drive this bitch out to Moab and back and I KNOW the locker won't make that any nicer

Maybe some perspective will help, my student loan payment is like 1200$/mo and that is for 10 YEARS. So I really want to stay on budget and pay that off early because fuck that noise.

I get it. There’s nothing wrong with doing just the gears. It will be more costly and time consuming in the end, but I know you know that.

Some of us might be willing to pitch in to help you get a rear locker if we knew how much you ideally needed.

For sure get that front lunchbox in there because that will make a bigger difference.

LOL I have tools, just not precision measuring equipment or a press! I'm not an expert by any means but I've been wrenching for over a decade.

I'm confident in my ability to make it happen, within months seems reasonable, I wouldn't try to do it without at least a week per axle so I can take my sweet ass time, but that shouldn't be an issue. Luckily there are generous people to at least eyeball a pattern to make sure I don't do something obviously dumb.

Yeah. I think I am willing to spend extra time working on the axles to allow myself to stay on my budget. Eventually that will pay off and a set of lockers will be nothing to me, right?

That is a nice thought. And you're a great guy for suggesting it. But, I don't think that would be right. At the end of the day I COULD afford it if I really Needed to but I am just prioritizing it below other things. I can be patient, and I know Moab will be a great time whether or not I am doing a bunch of stuff more difficult than last time.

You have a pretty capable rig as is. A 4:1 TCase would be nice with new gears. That would launch you to 78:1.

Since at the end of the day, as boring as it is, I am choosing to not have the money right now (by choosing to be responsible, zz). I can definitely appreciate the thought though so many great guys on this forum.

I'm not sure I'll ever get around to doing this. I don't know if it will be worth it to me. Maybe if I want to entertain a second TJ and got an auto I might swap the two.

When climbing, all the weight is usually on both rear tires.

This is actually something I was asking about earlier.

I know a selectable locker is useful in a lot of scenarios, but there is one specific one in Moab every year where it is painfully obvious my open diff is a problem. Going up an incline, with all the weight on the rear tires on the sticky rock, and one tire still spins. I know a locker would help, I wonder how an LSD would behave in that scenario.

Since a locker will definitely stop tire spin, does an LSD in that scenario?

IMO, a locker in the front would be more beneficial.

Yeah I could see that. It is anyways on 35s it looks like. It's a pretty intimidating trail, it's even pretty scary in the passenger seat
