They don’t. I would know.
That means either they trust synthetic for their uses or they don't use the winch.

And like I edited my post to reflect, rusting out your cable is a much bigger problem. If it can’t rust, it’s accepted out here. That means either they trust synthetic for their uses or they don't use the winch.
If we are going to drag in shit that doesn't matter for what we do from other industries, then by all means, let's go marine. You know why they don't use steel cable for deep rigging? The weight of the cable exceeds the breaking strength and it breaks under its own weight. They can carry their day job logging tools on a Jeep run all they want to. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that they are solving real problems I don't have often enough to do the same.

Up until 2013 when I left the design world of offshore cranes we used only steel and we went to 10,000 feet subsurface up to 150mm wire rope.If we are going to drag in shit that doesn't matter for what we do from other industries, then by all means, let's go marine. When I first started looking into the synthetic lines, there was a whole bunch of marine info out there and one of the points they kept hammering on was how much bigger steel cable had to be due to the weight factor. Lots of little diagrams and shit showing why steel is problematic. Of course, with 6" steel cable, I suspect that there is some leeway there.Up until 2013 when I left the design world of offshore cranes we used only steel and we went to 10,000 feet subsurface up to 150mm wire rope.
But we were looking at synthetics.
Yeah, single line 450MT load to 10,000 ft.When I first started looking into the synthetic lines, there was a whole bunch of marine info out there and one of the points they kept hammering on was how much bigger steel cable had to be due to the weight factor. For jeeps, I’d only run synthetic. I wouldn’t swap out a brand new synthetic from warn for something else though. I’d safety thimble it and enjoy.Apparently no one here has a strong opinion on the subject of steel vs. synthetic winch line.
I think I'll go read some shock absorber threads instead.
@mrblaine here’s a solution my Norwegian colleagues were working on. The drum is enclosed as it was climate controlled due to the heating of the synthetic ropes. I always thought it was a cool video, not sure where the technology has gone since. When I first started looking into the synthetic lines, there was a whole bunch of marine info out there and one of the points they kept hammering on was how much bigger steel cable had to be due to the weight factor. ...Back to our regularly scheduled program. My awesome wife got me a new Warn for Christmas. She ordered the M8-S (synthetic) but they sent the M8 (steel). Should I return it or just get a refund of the price difference and buy a synthetic line? The steel is $275 cheaper.
I suppose I'll also need a different fairlead.
Why the thumbs down @Lou?...Back to our regularly scheduled program.
So a little clarification? Did Warn screw the order up, or your awesome wife? (No offense).
Did she "overpay" by $275, or did she actually order the steel rope by mistake?
If she overpaid and it was Warn's fault, I'd call them out and have them make it right. Send you a fucking rope, and what ever it takes to make it work. You keep the steel for your trouble.
If she made the mistake (prb bargain hunting as my wife does), then I'd just buy the syn-rope and keep the steel rope as a back up, or throw it up on CL.
It's kinda cheezy, but I actually find exactly what I want, and if it's on Amazon put it in the cart, then tell my awesome wife what I really, really want, she clicks "buy".
If not Amazon, I send the link w/ it in the cart, no confusion.
I didn't want anything this year, but I (kinda) needed a new EDC Kershaw as mine has lost 1/4 of the blade over the last 12 years.
In the cart, done, and done.
BTW: Not wanting anything for Christmas gives you leverage the rest of the year![]()
I sent her the Amazon link from this forum's shop for the synthetic. (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00625F8RW/?tag=aiponsite-20&linkCode=ic5&ascsubtag=amzn1.infl.us.product&creativeASIN=B00625F8RW&ref=exp_tjforum_dp_vv_mw&th=1&psc=1). That's what she ordered. They must have just pulled the wrong box. If you look at this picture, the only difference is which one is checked on the front of the box. Easy enough mistake....Back to our regularly scheduled program.

Have them make it right...return shipping and all. It's on them, not you!I sent her the Amazon link from this forum's shop for the synthetic. As a result, she paid $895 for a synthetic version, but received the steel, which only costs $620.
Not taking sides (as usual), but pulling a log and winching yourself out of rocks is almost apples to oranges. In one the scenario the cable moves and in the other it doesn't.
