Tips to remove shift knob without damage

I know how the shift knob comes off, but last time I did it, despite my best efforts, I still ended up damaging the soft rubber.

Anyone got a trick to getting the center cap off without trashing the rubber?

Warm it up first, heat gun or blow dryer. It should be more "forgiving" then.
