There are kits that go on the side of the cowling on jk,s rugged ridge XHD for example. Is there anything like this on the market fo the TJ ?

If you're recommending anything with a K&N or similar reusable/washable filter, just understand such filters are absolutely the WORST where actually filtering dirt & dust out is concerned. I ask because Hauk shows K&N air filters in various intakes they sell.

The data from ISO 5001 conducted lab tests show the K&N is absolutely the worst filter for actually filtering air that has any dirt/dust component to it. As an air filter for typical dirty/dusty offroad conditions it's a joke.

I've always wanted to build a snorkel/light bar out of 2" SS tubing of roughly exhaust weight or slightly thinner. Have it come up each side of the windshield frame, bend over the top like the typical old school light bars. The lower ends would both go inside the cowl and feed the air intake. The middle of the upper section would be opened up into a nice clean rectangle pointing rearward with some screen on it.

Snorkel, cold air intake, light bar, what's not to like? The Swiss army knife of pissin folks off.

A little fiberglass angry grill to hold the screen on?

I don't trust the joins on the side mount kits, why route a tube that will be submerged if you need to use the snorkel ?

Fix your factory air intake first before you make your Jeep look dumb. Water up to the rockers is nowhere near enough to kill an engine.

Hi thanks for the reply. I,m afraid it's not my experience, I would like to keep the jeep standard but it failed and I hydrolocked my engine, so once bitten. Doubtless I contributed but I was only up to the sills with a 4" lift and even accounting for some inexperienced driving technique ,it should have been safe.So I am looking to improve the std system. Looking what's on the market overhear they are all bottom entry which looks prone to failure at the joints,maybe they are ok but If it can go wrong......

I have seen the Thor cold air intake, on you tube,goes through the cowling. Not sure about the filter and what happens when there's a torrential downpour- which living in Wales is a regular occurrence.
Anyone fitted one of these? What's good, what's bad.

I had the now-discontinued MAC cowl intake in my previous LJR and had no issues.

I like the idea of the cowl induction, however I do NOT like the "filter" they use. Completely inadequate.

The version I recall put the filter inside the cowl where you are less likely to open things up and replace it.

Correct, it was in the cowl. I don't like snorkel personally and actually did navigate water so I decided that was the next best thing. They did have an aluminum piece that covered 1/3 of the filter from the openings in the cowl to prevent water issues.

Looking back, a Windstar intake into the cowl is probably a better/easier design if you want to fab a little.

Ok, so you have some kind of guard over the filter in the cowl to stop direct water hitting the filter- and obviously has to be off the bottom to let water run through the cowl

this is how to do it i reckon. taps into the factory airbox which has to be good. Now, are these a kit or home made. Can't find any links to a kit. but this has to be the way to go. No ugly plastic up the side of the windscreen blocking your view.
