Why do you own a Wrangler?

So, I know we all love our Wranglers, but I want to know why you all own your Wrangler? I imagine some of us just own them because we love going off road and having our tops off. However, I'd also bet there are some of us who absolutely need to have an off road capable vehicle for living in remote areas.

That being said, what's your reason for owning a Wrangler?

For me it's the fact that I've wanted one since I was a child and had the fortunate opportunity to ride in one with the top off. In addition to that, when looking at all my options for off road capable vehicles the Wrangler not only looks the best, but arguably performs the best.

Because #1 my lame future brother-in-law came by my parent's house in a VERY cool old CJ-5 on the way out to the desert and refused to let me go with him. I was about 10 or 11 and never forgot that. Jerk! That old open CJ-5 was the coolest thing I had ever seen, especially when compared to my dad's '54 Mercury lol.

Then #2, I had a Jeep part of the time I was in Vietnam and I had more fun driving that around than I could believe. It was 25 years later that I finally got around to buying my first Wrangler and 20 years later, I'm still loving it.

Because there are places that I need to go where the Suburban won't go. If I lived in town, a bus pass would probably work just fine. I don't. I've owned six 4x4's in over 35 years of going off road for work and play. That's close to a million miles of driving a 4x4 on and off road. The list is a Chevy 3/4 ton Cheyanne Super, an XJ, an Acura SLX, a 3/4 ton Suburban, another XJ and the current TJ. I still have the Sub and the TJ. The two have different purposes and neither one can be substituted for the other. I gotta say the TJ is the most fun and the most capable.

I assume it's the large size of the Suburban that doesn't make it as capable off road as the TJ?

It's mostly the weight, the rear overhang and very long wheelbase. A lot of the woods up here are very close, as you know. Getting the Suburban turned or turned around can be problematic. Then there is the issue of height, you need to go under stuff almost as often as over stuff. The Sub is for getting weight / volume back into the hinterlands. It gets loaded with just about half of what the TJ weighs now on some trips. I scout in the TJ though, nothing has been better.

My uncle got me hooked as a child, he had a WWII surplus Jeep that I used to play around as a Kindergartner, I have wanted a Jeep since. I did not buy my first Jeep until 2 1/2-years ago after I bought a motor home to be relegated to toad duty. I made the mistake of going to Moab in a stock Wrangler X... it isn't stock any more.

Because they hold their value, they run forever if you do general maintenance, reliable, completely customizable, and they're bad machines! Go anywhere without a care. Cars are limited to pavement

Let's not forget the fact that the Wrangler is like none other to drive in Summer with the top off and doors off.

My father has had a Wrangler since 1999 when my parents bought it new. It has slowly evolved into a beast of a trail rig, so much so that my mother can't even drive it anymore. Honestly, it was confusing for me the first time too. The Atlas transfer case is a little intimidating. Over the years, prior to the transformation into a full time trail rig, my wife and I would use it whenever we visited them. Driving around Maine in the summer is just beautiful, and we always dreamed of owning our own Jeep some day.

Eventually, we got a little older, determined that we were not going to have kids, and decided to put some of our savings towards making the Jeep dream come true. We created a list of things we had to have and I started looking. My boss actually found the Jeep we ended up buying at a mom and pop lot down the street from my office. I negotiated the price down to $10,500 out the door for a 2001 Sahara with 101,000 miles, zero rust, Florida and Georgia owned (per carfax), Dana 44, and in overall excellent shape.

The main purpose, which I'll freely admit, is a fun weekend vehicle to drive around town, run errands, take the dogs to the park, etc. The secondary purpose is a bug out vehicle that can get us anywhere we need to go. I've seen my fair share of hurricanes already, and I like to be prepared. Lastly, and contrary to most of you, is off-roading.

Because I have always had some type of Jeep short wheel based vehicle since the mid 70s and the TJ/LJ in my opinion is the ultimate Jeep vehicle to own.
