New Axles for Daily Driving and Off-Road (Not Rock Crawling)

I think his comment is what some of us refer to as satire 😉 At least that’s how I read it.
Well then...

Why? The extra unsprung weight carried that low will lower the CG and improve stability. Plus it is a super tough rear end good to over 1200 Hp with the right parts.🤷‍♂️😉 I would recommend installing 9"housing ends so you can eliminate the C clips on the axles. Bonus you can grab the rear brakes from a Crown Vic and get 11" rear disk brakes in the deal.😎

Also, it's not about horsepower - it's about torque. And not torque from the engine, but rather torque to the axle shafts. My rig makes no where near 1200 ponies, but it throws about 50,000 foot pounds to the axle shafts. No way an 8.8 would hold up to that.

Your rig must be pretty heavy if it takes 50,000 lb/ft of torque to move it.🤔 Just sayin.😉

No tj needs big rear discs and less ground clearance.if you want weight down low fill your tires like a tractor or use these-

Beg to differ. The weight difference between an 8.8 and a Dana 30 is only 20 lbs and the pumpkin is only 2" larger so only a single inch of ground clearance is lost. Easily fixed with 2" bigger tires and finally how can anybody who has driven a TJ say that it doesn't need more and better brakes? 🤷‍♂️🙄

Hey guys thanks for your input on this. Sounds like the overall best answer is just to keep the axles I have and build them stronger. What about lockers or LSD int Dana 30 and 35?

How do you plan to install an 8.8 to replace the Dana 30? Last time I checked the 8.8 in my XJ doesn’t have steering knuckles.

If you go the Super35 route, you only have the option of a full locker, but you can choose electric or air, there may be a mechanical one too. I went the Eaton E-locker route as it was simpler (electric rocker switch vs on-board system) and meet my needs. Here's a thread I created about it; https://wranglertjforum.com/threads/super-35-cost.69877/

For the front 30 you have more options. You can leave it open diff, or install LSD or full locker, but the consensus of the board is that you will need chromoly shafts for 35s. You can even go with 30 spline shafts, but that's likely overkill for you. You'll have to make the choice of what you need/want/can afford for your carrier and shafts. Start searching and reading the forum.

They are out there my 97 TJ Sahara with a Dana 35 came with an LSD from the factory. I have also seen lunchbox lockers for sale. There are also stronger chromoly axle shafts available for the front and rear axles. Just limit your tire size to 35's and they will survive.

If you are not planning on getting into rock crawling and lifting tires into the air, get an LSD, preferably a helical system like the Detroit TruTrac. LSD is less expensive and won't fail on you out in the field like lockers sometimes can, leading to more time/money spent repairing. And someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure you could avoid the Super35 using an LSD for 35s.

I wouldn't, and didn't. 35's will put a lot of leverage on those shafts, which are C-clips so if you break one, you lose a wheel/axle. If he was running a smaller tire like a 31 then yeah I think a stock setup with LSD would be fine.
