Super Short SYE or SYE?

Figured this is as good a place as any to ask; how does the SSSYE vs SYE equation work with an LJ?

I'm in the process of deciding what to get for my 06 LJ (Dana 44 rear axle);

Currently installed/installing:
Savvy/Currie 4" short arm suspension lift kit
1.25" body lift
1" motor mount lift
UCF Ultra High Clearance Skid (~3.5" Transfer Case Lift)

My rough math says my driveline is seeing ~6-7" of lift with all of the above; but I dont know how the added LJ driveshaft length plays into the need to shave another 3-4" off. Should I go ahead and just bite the bullet and do the super short JB SYE and be done with it? Or am I wasting money that could be spent elsewhere?

Going directly to a Super Short SYE is the best option for most, for the LJ though it is not as important. Your call at this point. A longer driveshaft (read: less operating angle) is never a bad thing.
 
While a longer driveline is “better,” on an unlimited I’d say the trade off isn’t worth it simply for speedo reliability and adjustability. The speed sensors in the super short SYEs are not that great. I’d rather maintain the gear driven sensor if possible. Not because I think a gear is cheaper or better, but I do think the gear driven sensors are better than the tone ring style. Seem quite a few people need to replace their sensor in the kit, very rarely see someone need to replace the gear driven.
 
I think this is one of those rare areas where what you do is up to preference rather than need. I went with the SS on my LJ just to keep all of the driveline angles minimized, chasing mechanical reliability. That said, I think Macho is right about the Speedo deal. I haven’t tackled that yet partly due to just not wanting to deal with the process, but if fixing it was a matter of slipping in a new gear I probably would have fixed it already. Now I just know I am going 14% slower than my speedo says on 33’s and 4.88 gears.
 
I can’t find the exact thread right now, but I recall where Tom Wood’s son (owner of Tom Woods Driveshafts) chimed on this.

Essentially he said that LJs get no practical benefit from a SSYE. In fact, the longer driveshaft may potentially see more vibes from deep gearing.

I believe he also expressed his dislike for the SSYE even in TJs, due to the uncommon yoke it uses.



If I find the thread later, I’ll post up a link. You can’t go wrong either way, but I just don’t see any reason to pay up for a SSYE in an LJ for the typical build.

My tone ring/hall sensor from JB is going on 7-8 years. Never had an issue with it.

Not saying they can’t be reliable, but I’ve seen tons of them be problematic on the forums. Maybe it’s just a matter of squeaky wheel gets the grease, but I never see any issues from the speedo gear setup.

The calibration aspect is no real problem, just find a calibrator you like after some research and it will fix you up.

My hesitation on the super short is seeing complaints of the speed sensors in the kits failing to work after a while. Some work, some are problematic. There is nowhere to really buy replacements so you end up stuck asking for warranty replacements from whoever you got the kit from, if it ends up being a problem for you. Hopefully not and most probably aren’t a problem.
 
You could always install an Atlas, and get a shorter driveline than even the S-est SSYE… 🙂

For a small lift like you are planning, a regular SSYE will work fine, and be a bit simpler.

Getting an Atlas to fit with a tummy tuck could also be described as "problematic." 😆
