But how many times can you do it?

What are you asking? I do it all the time. I do all 4 tires every time. maybe 12 times a year, over the past 4 years?

I’ve filled 12 tires in one sitting. It’s not the greatest, but to say it won’t work is nonsense.

It also runs both my lockers. One day I’ll get another source as I would like some redundancy as it serves dual roles, but again, saying it won’t work is nonsense from my experience.

10-12 minutes to fill all 4 is not terrible. I use that time to stretch my back out from a long day of wheeling and to inspect the jeep

You sure you're using the locker compressor?

Locker pump has a duty cycle of 35% and the following air flows
  • Air Flow 0PSI 0.98CFM
  • Air Flow 29PSI 0.70CFM
ARB single has a duty cycle of 50% and the following air flows
  • Air Flow 0PSI 3.08CFM
  • Air Flow 29PSI 2.34CFM

It's no good for anything other than lockers so you'll definitely need another compressor for OBA.

I'm thinking I'll go with a larger compressor with higher CFM mounted in the rear, with an air tank mounted underneath for on-board air.

But this one I think will be perfect for the lockers themselves.

I had an air tank and removed it. Somewhere on here I did some comparison testing with and without the tank and the tank improved speed but not enough to make it worth it. I'd recommend forgetting the tank, it works almost as well and makes life easier.

What size tank did you test it with?

See, that's been a hang-up i've had, and i'm glad you brought it up.

An air tank can ONLY be as good as it's maximum capacity.
After it's capacity is depleted, it's merely just an inline free-flow valve from compressor to tire.
Meaning, after it's depleted, the CFM will ONLY match what the compressor can output.

Most people un-knowingly treat the system as if the tank is 'adding' some sort of 'extra cfm' ; when in reality it's just reserve pressurized air storage. It's quite literally just a tank to hold 'extra' air.

Using 33x12.50 tires as an example:
33x12.50 have roughly 8400 cubic inches (4.86 Cubic Feet) of air volume PER TIRE (at atmospheric pressure)

Since atmospheric pressure is roughly 14.7psi, Every '4.8' Cubic Feet of volume would figure about 14.7psi.

Inflating from 0psi to 25psi per tire, you'd need roughly 8 Cubic Feet of volume PER TIRE.
Inflating from 10psi to 25PSI per tire, you'd need roughly 4.8 Cubic Feet of Volume PER TIRE. (35 gallons of air volume)

We're talking tank sizes of 30+ gallons @ 160psi to negate the usage of the compressor AND fill 4 tires....

Unless you're running a tank of that size (which most people aren't) I don't see a tank being worth anything, aside from running air tools.

it's much more simple to skip the tank all-together, and just utilize a higher CFM compressor that doesn't require a tank.

Feel free to correct me if i'm wrong.

My whole goal has been to minimize failure points and my air system was too complicated with a tank and running lockers and OBA.

I've had Viair with a tank, ARB dual with a tank, Just the ARB dual all running lockers too.

Now I have a locker compressor which is much quieter and simplistic running the lockers and just the dual ARB for the tires.

This ARB I just bought for the lockers, then possibly an under-tub mounted dual motor option for tires.
(if I can figure out a way to mount it and fab up a skid for it, as to not damage it.

I've just been brainwashed a bit into thinking I should add a tank, but in my head I'm swaying towards simple & tankless.

Both of my ARB’s are in the engine bay. I wouldn’t put something that expensive under the tub if you don’t have to. I could see the dual going in the tub near where you’d keep your hose or maybe under a seat.

I'm 100% mounting the locker compressor in the factory ABS tray (since I don't have ABS) , but kind of clueless as to where to mount a second compressor.

I know the twin ARB has mounting brackets, but if I can manage to steer away from that $500 compressor, i'd prefer that. :ROFLMAO:

I'll try to get a pic in the next day or two but the dual is on the ABS tray and the locker pump is bolted to an aluminum plate that is bolted to my inner fender between the cruise control and the washer bottle.

I hadn't thought about mounting to the inner fender.
This single is small, and I had considered mounting it either to the ABS tray, or even mounting it on the firewall somewhere.

There's surprisingly a lot of places it will fit in.

Mine was under my hood for a while, but would often overheat and not be able to fill all the tires. I can't fully say it was too hot under normal usage, because within a few months my cats were clogged and had to be replaced. I since got a York, which brings some other considerations (but it's fast as hell and runs off the engine speed).

I'm not terribly concerned with overheating, as this one will only be used for lockers.
So it won't be running hard.

Whatever I decide for my on-board main compressor might be a different story though...
I've considered mounting it inside the tub, in the rear, since that's where I throw my toolbag/etc anyways when I go on the trails.
(and seeing that I have to stand outside the jeep to air the tires anyways, i'm not concerned about in-cab noise, because I won't be in the cab while running it.. :ROFLMAO: )

I have an ARB dual compressor in the engine bay of my 5th gen 4runner. That engine bay is packed full of aftermarket stuff I've added over the years including a giant supercharger so it definitely sees a lot of heat and it's never presented any issues.
